Breadloaf Transfusion

Update 4/8:
Owen and I can’t thank you all for your support. Breadloaf is slowly improving. He had a repeat CBC and infectious disease panel done last Friday. His CBC revealed his red blood cell count increased from 12% to 25%. He is still considered anemic, but our internal medicine vet said this is very positive news as it shows signs of regeneration. This means his bone marrow is able to get his new red blood cells into his system. The likelihood of it being an immune mediated disease is high on the list. With that said, he will continue a regiment of 2 different steroids over the next couple- several months. He will be going in on a biweekly basis for repeat CBC panels to monitor. The infectious disease panel will rule out any tick borne illness, but we won’t get those results back for another 2-4 weeks. He has a history of Lyme disease so they just wanted to double check that as this far all tick borne illness he has been testing negative for. We seriously cannot thank you all enough for loving our sweet boy. He’s tough
-Emily and Owen

Hi, my name is Emily. I'm Breadloaf's momma. Over the past few weeks, we discovered that Breadloaf was anemic after we completed bloodwork in preparation for his routine dental cleaning. All of his imaging has come back normal. We took him to our primary vet today to retest his bloodwork after 1 week on antibiotics and steroids to find that his red blood cell count was critically low and white blood cell count critically high. His numbers were worse than his previous 2 blood draws. We were referred to the emergency vet hospital immediately to get a blood transfusion.

His diagnosis and source of anemia are still unclear. It could be related to a condition called PIMA, which is an auto-immune condition. Or, it could be related to leukemia or lymphoma. We will have more answers once a clinical pathologist reviews his lab work.

The blood transfusion incredibly expensive. We do have pet, insurance, however, they are denying all of our claims saying that his condition was pre-existing. If he does have PIMA, it can be treated with steroids. If he does have cancer, Owen and I will have to decide what we think is the best and most reasonable option for Breadloaf's future.

We are asking if you wouldn't mind sharing this fundraiser so we can figure out what is causing our Breadlaof to be so sick. We want to give him a fighting chance. Thank you in advance for your thoughts and consideration to donate.

Love,
Owen, Emily, Breadloaf, and Barkie
