Brea's trip to Midwives for Haiti

For as long as I can remember I have wanted to serve medical missions, but there was always an excuse as to why I couldn't go or why I didn't think I would qualify. However, the Lord says to go into the world and proclaim the gospel (Mark 16:15) and to be imitators of Christ (1 Cor 11:1). So guess what, I'm obeying my God and I'm going!

I have been blessed with the opportunity to help provide care and education to the women of Haiti! I will be serving from January 30-Febuary 13 (dates are tenative) volunteering my time and skills to a midwifery training project with "Midwives for Haiti".

The lack of skilled obstetrical workers makes Haiti the most dangerous place in the Western Hemisphere to be pregnant, or a newborn. According to World Health Organization statistics, 350 women die for every 100,000 births. That rate in the US is 12.6 maternal deaths per 100,000 births.

In the rural areas of Haiti, only 25% of births are attended by someone with the training and supplies needed to make childbirth safe. Midwives for Haiti has been working since 2004 to train nurses to be skilled birth attendants.

In just 2 short months I will travel to Hinche, Haiti and stay in a Midwife house with other OB volunteers. Throughout the day we will provide classroom teaching, travel with a Mobile Prenatal Clinic to provide care to women in rural areas, and work with students at the local hospital as they care for laboring and delivering mothers. Our training and services will allow students to become birth attendants. Birth attendants are Haitian women who will train with this organization to deliver babies since there are very few OBGYNs and midwives in the country. Most of these women have no access to prenatal care, or medications to aid with complications associated with pregnancy. These complications are easily treated with accessible medcations and hospitals here in the US. Can you imagine being in fear through out your entire pregnancy? Not knowing if you or your baby will survive the delivery?

The cost of my travel, lodging, and food will be roughly $2,000. If you find it in your heart to give, any amount would be greatly appreciated by myself, as well as the women we will be helping in Haiti; these two weeks I will recieve no compensation. Any extra funds I recieve will be used to purchase the much needed supplies for the program.
