statement of purpose:
My name is Brea’ Williams, and I am a first-generation college student from Baltimore, MD. Since I was young, it has been my dream to travel the world. Growing up lower-middle
class, I never had the opportunity to travel far outside of my home in Baltimore county. While I deeply cherish my hometown, my heart has always longed to experience the beauty, culture, and diversity that exists beyond my familiar surroundings. The ability to see the world has always seemed like a distant dream—one that I have held onto with great hope. To this day, I have never been on an airplane, never applied for a passport, and never even owned a suitcase. For as long as I can remember, I have packed my belongings for short
weekend trips to Virginia with family in the same mint green Adidas duffle bag, which I still use for my minute travels as an adult. While I have found ways to explore within my own means, I am ready to expand my horizons and immerse myself in a culture that is completely new to me. Studying abroad in Argentina is not only an incredible academic opportunity but a personal milestone that will serve as a catalyst for future adventures. As a general fine arts major, photography minor, I have dedicated my studies to capturing the
world through my hand. My passion for storytelling, culture, and artistic expression is what drives my work. The chance to study in Argentina, a country rich in history, vibrant in culture, and filled with breathtaking landscapes, aligns perfectly with my artistic and personal aspirations. I have heard about the wonders of Argentina from a close mentor of mine, Nate Larson, and the way he speaks about its beauty and artistic inspiration has only fueled my
desire to experience it for myself. Being able to document my journey in a place so unlike my own will not only deepen my artistic perspective but also allow me to grow as a person. Beyond the photographic inspiration, studying in Argentina will provide me with an invaluable cultural experience. Immersing myself in a different country, learning a new language, and adapting to a new way of life will challenge me in ways that will foster both independence and
resilience. As someone who values personal growth and education beyond the classroom, I see this opportunity as a transformative experience that will shape my future in ways I cannot yet imagine. It is one thing to learn about the world from books, lectures, and secondhand stories, but it is another to step foot in a place and experience it firsthand. This study abroad program is more than just a trip. It is the fulfillment of a lifelong dream. It represents the start of my journey into the world, an opportunity to prove to myself that my
dreams are within reach. I would adore the opportunity to study and explore in Argentina, to learn from its people, its art, and its landscapes. With this experience, I hope to return home with not only photographs but memories and lessons that will stay with me for a lifetime.
