Brave Adriana needs a new roof, internet to learn

Donation protected
Background:
A couple of years ago, Skarleth (mom) and Adriana (daughter who was younger than 8 at the time) walked through the jungle at 38 degrees celsius to cross into Costa Rica from Nicaragua. This was as a result of the civil unrest in Nicaragua at the time as well as the fact that there was no work for single moms in Nicaragua.

Skarleth found work in Costa Rica and held down several jobs. Skarleth and Adriana lived in one room with another mom and her son. Skarleth lost one job after another simply because she did not have documentation and finally when she lost the job at the restaurant, Skarleth and Adriana found themselves homeless. They slept in the town park. This was in February and March of 2019. At this point, I started fundraising for Skarleth and Adriana. Skarleth was raped while she and Adriana were homeless but she managed to protect eight-year-old Adriana from the same fate. Skarleth's youngest daughter, Linceth, is the result of the rape.

As a result of our donations we were able to rent and furnish a house for Skarleth and Adriana for just over a year; we paid for Skarleth to go to Nicaragua and obtain her documentation; we bought a Chromebook for Adriana and started to educate her remotely. Thank you so much for your love and support!

Now, please read the rest of their story:
Skarleth's baby, Linceth was born in November.

Skarleth received full pre-natal and post-natal medical care in Costa Rica because she has her documentation.

Thank you for your help in getting her documentation.

Adriana was hit by a car in March.

She had severe bruising on her body and head.

She had an x-ray of her head but not a CAT scan.

She had a headache for several weeks.

With our donations we bought a Chromebook for Adriana so that she can learn reading, writing and math in Spanish and English.

She started on-line tutoring about one month ago. I have volunteered my time four hours per week to tutor Adriana.

I will commit to tutor Adriana on-line and to maintaining a Spanish tutor for her for at least the next twelve months (and most likely much longer).

Skarleth won the lottery!

She won $2000 Canadian.

She immediately took the money and bought her own house.

As she says, "It is not pretty but it is mine. I can stay there forever and only pay the electric."

Then the rains started.....and the roof leaks.

The torrential rains last for four months in Costa Rica. There is a chance of dengue and just ill-health living in a flooded home.

Skarleth has her passport, birth certificate and national ID (cedula) thanks to our donations in 2019.

Linceth has her birth certificate and passport also thanks to our donations.

Adriana has her birth certificate.

A $300 donation is earmarked for Adriana's passport but due to Skarleth's late stage pregnancy, having a newborn and now coronavirus, obtaining Adriana's passport has been delayed.

In order to qualify for permanent residency in Costa Rica, Adriana, Skarleth and Linceth must make a trip to Nicaragua and then return to Costa Rica (this updates their visa status in Costa Rica).

Adriana and Skarleth must then go to San Jose, the capital of Costa Rica, to the Nicaraguan consulate to apply for and obtain Adriana's passport.

Adriana and Skarleth must apply for permanent residency.

Linceth is a Costa Rican citizen because she was born in Costa Rica. By extension, Skarleth and Adriana also qualify for permanent residency.

Permanent residency will provide access to non-emergency health care, education, work and social programs for single moms like subsidized housing,  food programs etc. as well as security, stability and elevated status and respect in Costa Rican society.

When I took care of Adriana last summer, while her mom, Skarleth, went to Nicaragua to obtain her documentation, Adriana prayed every night. She gave thanks for all of her blessings! It was very meaningful to me to see Adriana, who has experienced such hardship, show such gratitude. Adriana is a joyful, bright child and Skarleth is industrious and resourceful and despite the many hardships she has experienced in her life, Skarleth remains positive and optimistic too. This is simply incredible to me and has motivated me to be more grateful in my own life.

Outline of Expenses:
Estimated cost of return trip to Nicaragua: $400
Cost of application for permanent residency: $400
Unexpected Incidentals: $200
Total cost for Skarleth and Adriana to obtain permanent residency: $1000

Monthly cost of internet for Adriana to learn math, reading and writing: $50/month
Total cost of internet for 12 months: $600

The cost of a new roof is: $1000 OR the cost of an entirely new structure INCLUDING a new roof is: $5000

GOAL: $6600

As a community, we have made a meaningful difference to Skarleth, Adriana and Linceth and we can continue to make a life-changing impact on them.

Will you help me by contributing $20 or more toward their permanent residency, Adriana's education and their housing?
