My uncle Branislav has been living a nightmare for the past two years, he has been in and out of the hospital dealing with terrifying flesh-eating bacteria and skin eating bacteria (Necrotizing Fasciitis & Cellulitis). He is a diabetic so naturally his body was not able to fight the bacteria, causing him to lose his right leg almost entirely. Only 14 cm is left between the remaining of his femur bone and his hip, which won’t sustain a standard prosthetic if given to him.
The name of the next procedure my uncle will have to undergo is called Osseointegration, which is installing a titanium implant at the end of his remaining femur bone so that stability can be achieved when the prosthetic is applied. With this process my uncle can feel like a new man - he will be given his essential birth right to walk again!
After his final surgery and some rest in the hospital, my uncle is currently back home doing his best to start his new life and face the challenges that await him with confidence. He has done very well so far by checking his sugar levels regularly and making sure he is living a healthier life. He has spent most of his days at home exercising with the wheelchair and crutches given to him by the hospital. He also has a physical therapist who would assist him with other exercises and movements he might be able to do. Unfortunately, my uncle does not live in a building with an elevator so he cannot leave his home at his own will. Because he needs to be assisted up and down the stairs, our aim is to use the money that will be raised to cover the cost of this special prosthetic surgery that might bring life back into my uncle.
Imagine being cooped up at home for 24 hours a day without having the chance to leave your home at any given moment. What if a fire broke out? It is devastating to think he would remain helpless...
