Hi everyone! My name is Brandon Lajoie. I was born with SMA 1 (Spinal Muscular Atrophy, which is the most severe one.) SMA is a type of Muscular Dystrophy that progressively steals away the strength in your muscles. I am actually one of the lucky ones. I was never supposed to make it to 3, and certainly not to 51 years old!! I have only two fingers that still move and with this slight movement I can operate a fiber optic wheelchair, and I have a wonderful voice activated computer, et al to keep me as independent at home as I can be. But I need a new van! My 2008 Dodge Caravan has been patched so many times there isn’t enough steel or fiberglass to attach the patches to and unfortunately this past weekend, it was damaged so much that the repair would cost more than it is even worth. So as humbling as this is, I am asking for help. These wheelchair van adaptions are extremely expensive… we are talking $50,000 plus... and all of the expenses are out of pocket. I have a limited budget, and there is no way I can afford a new van without some help. I am confined to a wheelchair and can only be driven in a custom van that I can drive my wheelchair into. It is vital to get to my numerous doctor appointments that I have every month and without transportation, it would very difficult to do so.
