Brandon Harrison Healing Garden Memorial

Tax deductible
Thank you so much for sharing and contributing! We have closed the campaign and hope you keep updated on the garden's progress by following us @ffsjstocktonAbout the Brandon Harrison Memorial Garden:
The Brandon Harrison Memorial Garden is a healing centered garden where we grow indigenous healing plants and hold community workshops and healing ceremonies. We also plant Healing Roots trees: which are trees that we plan to honor those who have lost their lives due to violence by planting life where life was taken. In addition to planting trees we offer healing services to families through our Stockton Trauma Recovery Center. We have transformed our garden to be a healing community space; it provides a way for families to have a physical connection with their lost loved ones. This sacred space also reinforces a sense of togetherness so families don’t feel so alone knowing that there are other families around them who have gone through similar experiences, while also helping them go through grief.

Stockton’s youth are  disconnected from the natural environment due to safety issues and lack of access. Fathers & Families of San Joaquin's Youth & Racial Justice Department aims at providing safety, guidance, and leadership growth to our youth.  Our youth have access to the healing garden where we hold healing circles and culturally-rooted programming in the space. We also teach youth about gardening, tree planting, and the value of community service.  The natural and green environment provide a tranquil space for youth to be able to seek peace of mind and learn gardening skills in order to reconnect back to the land and become environmental stewards.

We offer workshops such as decolonizing our diets, growing and cooking produce from the garden, doing environmental testing, and tree planting to green our environment. A variety of herbs and vegetables are grown in the garden and are intended to give back to the community through produce stands and produce boxes.

Our Campaign:
We are now in the process of designing our garden and expanding programming to bring it to its full potential and are looking for some help to get the needed funds to do so. The money we are asking for will go towards:
* Healing Roots Memorials: To sponsor more Healing Roots memorials to be able to plant the trees in honor of the individual, create the memorial placard, and contribute towards the healing ceremony for the family to go through the healing process.
* Planter boxes: To create more planter boxes and be able to paint and decorate them. Also to create planter packages for participants to bring transplants from the garden to start their own home gardens.
* Upkeep of the garden: Be able to cover water fees, maintenance fees, and provide stipends for youth who volunteer their time to clean and water the garden.
* Culturally-Rooted Healing Activities: To provide more events at our garden, including our culturally-rooted, trauma informed rites of passage healing circles for young men and women that focuses on building healthy identities for youth through character development and identifying negative stressors and developing positive coping mechanism.
* Garden Design: We would like to build a gazebo and a concrete pathway to provide ADA accessibility and shade cover to open the garden to community events.

We also would like to provide a token of appreciation for contributing towards the campaign:
$20 Handwritten card of thanks with a doodle.
$50 to receive a Brandon Harrison memorial poster.
$100 gets an acknowledgement of their dedication with their name painted by youth on the planter box and a Brandon Harrison Memorial poster.
$200 gets their name painted by youth on the and choice of small flower or herb to plant in a designated area planter box.
$300 gets a wooden memorial placard
For the person who gives the highest donation, we will host an event at the garden for the donor and guests that will include entertainment and food items prepared from the produce in the garden.

Brandon Harrison’s Legacy:
Brandon Harrison is a son, grandson, brother, father, nephew, friend, community leader, bright light and beloved spirit. He was, and always will be, a rising star. Brandon was a passionate young man who had an immense love of learning, fought tirelessly for equity and racial justice, and believed that "self-love heals all wounds." He was a community organizer and policy advocate who promoted health, healing justice, unity, & restorative practices. He was deeply committed to ending the school-to-prison pipeline and will always be remembered in the statewide movement for youth justice. His brilliant mind and genuine ability to connect with people of all ages, experiences, and walks of life, will be remembered by everyone he ever touched. When he spoke he moved people, often to tears, with his unapologetic honesty, depth of knowledge and wisdom, fierce love, heartfelt connections to systemic injustice, and bold visions for the future he believed in. He was proud of his growth over the last several years from a youth participant, to a Fellow, to a Youth Movement Builder at Fathers & Families of San Joaquin in Stockton. He was also a student at San Joaquin Delta College.

His goals for the future were to keep fighting for justice, graduate from college, work at The California Endowment or the Capitol, buy a house, and be an amazing father to his sons. He loved his family and he loved Stockton, his city and home. He was striving to create a healthier community for his sons, Adrian and Noah, to grow up in. He also expressed that in order for him to survive and thrive, he might need to leave Stockton for a while. Plans were in process for him to begin an internship soon with The California Endowment, another step toward fulfilling his goal of working there someday. He was a member of the The California Endowment President's Youth Council, National Youth Transition Funders Group - Youth Justice Work Group, and the Statewide #FreeOurDreams Youth Policy Team. He was also involved in the California Alliance for Youth & Community Justice, Alliance for Boys & Men of Color, Positive Youth Justice Initiative, Central Valley Movement Building, California Equity Leaders Network, Movement Warriors, Neighborhoods Owning Power Action & Leadership, Sons & Brothers, YO! Cali, and #SchoolsNotPrisons. Brandon loved spending time with his family, reading to his sons, watching Naruto, being outdoors, going fishing, listening to music, and eating his mom's homemade meals. Above all, Brandon loved deeply and was deeply loved in return, by his family, friends, and countless people whose lives he touched. His legacy will live on and his spirit will endure, always. We love you Brandon, be smooth.
