My beautiful, vibrant 22-year-old sister Chanti has had her life shattered in the period of a week. From surfing in sunny South Africa on Valentine’s Day, to misdiagnoses from doctors and the ER, to an MRI scan revealing an undiagnosable brain lesion.
The specialists can’t treat her without a brain biopsy and there is an imminent danger of the lesion growing with life threatening effects the longer it is left. The huge doses of steroids she has been prescribed have caused massive side effects on her physically, resulting in more trips to the ER and hospitalization for days.
Chanti has been left stranded in SA, unable to return home to the UK as her flight on 8 Feb 2021, was cancelled due to the COVID-19 SA variant. Then the tragic discovery of her brain lesion and it’s resulting intracranial pressure and edema, has prevented her from being eligible to fly. The nightmare continues as she has no medical aid in South Africa. The travel and medical insurance that Chanti diligently took before leaving the UK, has refused to pay her medical expenses due to a Covid-19 loophole.
As Chanti has only been working in the UK since August 2020 on a casual contract, she does not have the finance to cover her medical expenses, nor can she afford the very expensive specialized brain biopsy that is vital for the lesion diagnosis and further specific treatment. Without your help, generosity and compassion, Chantal’s future is in jeopardy.
