In late March 2022, Matt Winkeljohn suffered a severe accident. Matt was taken to the emergency room via ambulance, where scans showed chance fractures in his T11, T12, and L1 vertebrae and a subdural hematoma.
The trauma department treated him for 1 day, and then Matt was moved to the ICU for close monitoring. Matt has gotten several CT scans to monitor the hematoma and x-rays to monitor the fractures. Thankfully, the hematoma is not growing, and the chance fractures are not interfering with his spinal cord or spinal nerves at the moment. Matt was transferred to a regular hotel room after a few days, spending just over a week in the hospital.
The chance fractures have the potential to heal on their own, or they can be surgically fixed. However, manual healing can take up to 12 weeks, and spinal surgery has been suggested to hinder his intervertebral discs from slipping and potentially affecting his spinal cord. No surgeries have been planned, but it is a potential outcome.
We ask any willing friends or family to donate towards Matt's current and future medical expenses; he will be in a rehabilitation/physical therapy program soon. All donations are appreciated and greatly matter. Let's get Matt back on his feet and healthy again!
