Braille device for Sala-Joy

Donation protected
Our brilliant daughter Sala-Joy was born blind 9 years ago. She loves life and learning, especially reading about nature and science, and writing stories and letters. She’s a wiz at braille. Unfortunately, brailled books aren’t very easy to come by and the only braille writing device we have at home is a very old Perkins Brailler that’s too heavy for her to lift (it’s made of solid steel!) and can’t connect to the many wonderful digital resources out there (it’s more like a 1950’s type writer:)) So we’d love to get her a BrailleNote Touch .

The BrailleNote Touch is a tablet for the blind. It uses refreshable braille cells and is web connected, which means the visually impaired can instantly download and read any book independently. Sala-Joy will also be able to journal and write stories and letters whenever she wants. As her parents, we can follow along on screen in normal text as she brailles her homework (very handy as her braille is light years ahead of ours now!). It’s also super lightweight and portable, provides voiceover if Sala-Joy wants it, has a silent keyboard (traditional braille writers are very noisy) and can connect to a printer or braille embosser.

As its’s a niche piece of technology, the BrailleNote touch doesn’t come cheap! It costs £4,415. We’ve already got funding for 40% from the fantastic charity Guide Dogs UK , leaving £2,649 for us to raise. Our goal is to do so by the start of December, so Sala-Joy can receive the device this Christmas. If you’d like to donate we’d be thrilled, whatever the sum. As they say, every little helps:)
