Braille Calculators for Visually Impaired and Blind Learners

Math should open doors, not close them. Yet for millions of visually impaired and blind students and adults, something as basic as a calculator can be a barrier instead of a tool.

STEM Engine is building a full line of LOW COST, fully functional braille calculators designed specifically for visually impaired and blind users, from early learners to advanced STEM students. These calculators are tactile, high-contrast, Braille-enabled, and include clear audio output in both English and Spanish (My First Talking Calculator). They work independently, right out of the box.

We are raising $50,000 to bring all three calculator models, from basic (My First Talking Calculator ) to scientific, into production so that visually impaired and blind learners can access math with confidence, independence, and dignity.

The Problem

For many visually impaired and blind students, math tools are either inaccessible, overly complex, or prohibitively expensive.

In classrooms, testing environments, and at home, students often rely on:

Outdated devices that do not meet modern learning needs

Workarounds that depend on constant assistance

High-cost specialty tools that are out of reach for families and schools

This lack of accessible, affordable tools limits independence and sends a quiet but damaging message about who does not have access to math and STEM learning.

The Solution

STEM Engine is creating a tiered line of accessible calculators that grow with the learner:

One-digit calculator for early math

Three-digit calculator for more advanced operations

Scientific calculator for secondary education, college, and workforce use

Each calculator is designed with:

Braille labeling

High-contrast tactile buttons

Clear audio output in English and Spanish

Independent, out-of-the-box usability

These tools are built to support independence, confidence, and full participation in math and STEM, without requiring constant assistance or additional technology.

Why This Matters Now

Access to math is access to opportunity.

As education, testing, and workforce pathways increasingly rely on quantitative skills, visually impaired and blind learners cannot afford to be left behind due to inaccessible tools. Early access builds confidence. Continued access supports persistence. Advanced access opens doors to college and careers.

This project is about more than calculators. It is about equity, dignity, and ensuring that visual impairment does not limit potential.

How Funds Will Be Used

Your donation will directly support continuing
  • Refinement and development of three calculator models
  • Engineering and software development for audio and accessibility features
  • Accessibility testing with visually impaired and blind users
  • In-house pilot manufacturing using 3D printing
  • Materials and components for initial production runs
  • A small production and assembly workspace
  • Outreach to schools, families, and organizations serving the visually impaired and blind communities

We are committed to transparency and will provide donor updates as milestones are reached.

Who Is Behind This

Stem Engine is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit founded in 2025. The team brings together experience in engineering, software development, and operations, united by a mission to expand access to STEM through practical, human-centered design.

We believe accessibility should be intentional, affordable, and built in from the start.

Call to Action

Your support makes this possible.

Whether you give $10 or $1,000, you are helping someone:

Learn math independently

Build confidence in the classroom
