Meet Brady James Wiltjer Engrahm.
Today is Brady James' Second Birthday. You may have seen him in past performances such as "Mom, I just ate your undies" and "No Dad, I didn't chew a hole in all of your blankets."
Kirstin adopted Brady from a shelter in Franklin County, Virginia. Looking back, this was the best decision that was ever made, not just for Brady, but for us. We noticed immediately how attracted Brady is to humans. We also noticed how humans gravitate toward this very special boy. Coming from the shelter, Brady also showed some signs of aggression when he did not get his way and he got into absolutely everything around! He would not sit still for 5 seconds. He frustrated us, took us to our limits, but we couldn't help but have such a soft spot in our hearts for this problem child. As time went on, we noticed some changes in Brady. We were socializing him, and taking him everywhere we went. He became known as the "Dancing Pup" at a local brewery. Kirstin would pick him up and dance with him and all these other people we didn't know would ask if they could have the next song with him haha. Brady also loves to harass his sisters, Gidget Marie and Bella Lynn, but when it comes down to it, he protects them and loves them. Over the next few months he started to mature, and show extreme loyalty and unconditional love for us. He sleeps in the bed and became the world's very best snuggler. His personality and mannerisms blossomed. Brady is also so lucky to have such special friends in his life and we know how much our friends adore him. If you are one of his Aunts or Uncles, you know who you are and Brady wants you to know how much you mean to him. There are a few times in our lives that we are so lucky to find our soulmate. This, for us, is one of those times.
Right now Brady needs his family and friends more than ever. On Monday of this week we took Brady to his Primary Care Veterinarian at Crossroads Veterinary Hospital. Brady was showing signs of not feeling well starting last weekend. We noticed that his energy level was slightly down and was not as interested in food as he normally is. After running some tests we learned Brady's Kidneys were failing him. Our next step was to immediately transfer him to VHS (Veterinary Specialist Hospital) where he would be under the care of an Internal Medicine Specialist. He was given IV Fluids and Antibiotics to help flush his kidneys and treat any infectious disease that may be causing all of this. On Tuesday, they rechecked his bloodwork and when it came back, the numbers were going in the wrong direction. The same happened yesterday when his labs came back. At this point, we are in consensus that an Infectious Disease is not what is causing his Kidneys to fail. This leaves the possibility of an Immune Mediated Disease or him being born with a deformation of structure in his Kidneys. We pulled the trigger on Immunosuppressive Therapy in hopes we can stop his Immune System from attacking his Kidneys. We are waiting for more labs to come back today while he is still in the ICU. There is a possibility we will be able to bring him home very soon to continue his meds and supportive therapy. Although this is a long shot, we remain hopeful. The good news is, the staff at VHS adores him and he is in very capable and knowledgeable hands. Apparently Brady James has obtained a fan club at the hospital.
We are asking for everyone to send Brady your prayers, your good vibes, your strong energy or any other way you personally choose to support our special boy. Give hugs and kisses to all of your fur babies in Brady James name.
We have agreed that if he does not show improvement and his quality of life deteriorates in any way, we will choose the correct decision for him. If it comes down to it we will be able to say goodbye to our special boy on his and our terms in the comfort of home.
The cost of him being in the ICU since Monday is overwhelming, but with something that came on so fast and Brady being so young we feel like we have to give him the shot he deserves to start feeling better. A Go Fund Me has been set up to help offset a small portion of the cost of his care. For the sake of transparency, his bill is around $6000 at this time.
We love our friends and family so much, and the support you have already shown us has filled our hearts with love.
Thank you,
Kirstin Wiltjer & Aaron Engrahm
