Hello friends and family. I'm Pete, my 28 year old son Brad crashed his bicycle on 9/8/22 while avoiding a pedestrian who stepped into the bike lane. The pedestrian left the scene before the ambulance arrived and witnesses said the pedestrian was at fault. Brad suffered a TBI (traumatic brain injury) and underwent emergency brain surgery at Bellevue hospital. During surgery they removed a large portion of the right side of his skull to relieve pressure and remove and drain a hematoma. The Neurosurgeon told me it was the largest hematoma he'd ever seen. Brad also fractured his left clavicle and suffered multiple orbital fractures. After the surgery, Brad spent the following ten days fighting for his life in the Neuro-Surgery ICU dept, where he contracted staphylococcus, pneumonia, and a punctured lung, presumably from excessive ambu-bag treatment. He was on a ventilator for 6 days and a feeding tube for 9 days. It has been 13 days since the accident. Brad is now in the Med/Surg unit and just got his chest/drain tube removed, so he's down to just one IV, which is encouraging. He has yet to regain movement in his right arm and leg but began lightly gripping with his right hand yesterday, which is a good sign. Brad lives a healthy lifestyle, some of his favorite things include yoga, tennis, snowboarding, biking and is an avid music fan. He was also quite the baseball player growing up. He totally enjoys his job, where he's spent the majority of his career since 2016 as a loan officer and he especially enjoys the camaraderie he shares with his coworkers. Brad powered through CU Boulder in 4 years and received a B.S. degree in Business Administration with an emphasis in Marketing. His Mom Nia, and I have been constantly by his side and we'll stay here in NYC throughout his rehab, etc. Nia has slept at his bedside every night in a recliner. His friends who are constantly calling, visiting and bringing his pureed food have given him that extra edge and strength to continually make daily progress and we are so appreciative of that. Brad also finds inspiration from the song 'Come sail away' by Styx, which he's asked me to play multiple times over the last couple of days.
We are asking for donations for Brad's well-being, firstly to help with the hospital charges, then to get him into the best rehabilitation facility and cover any rehab equipment that he may need thereafter. The end goal is to get Brad as close as humanly possible to return to the quality of life that he once had.
Thank you in advance
