My name is Brad Celmainis. I am a small business owner in Calgary.
In the summer of 2021, I was approached (long story) to set up a legal Third Party Advertiser ("TPA") for the October 2021 municipal election in Calgary, to push back on a controversial candidate in my local ward.
I was hoping that was the end of it when this candidate lost by a wide margin in October 2021.
From that point forward, I was targeted for harassment by anonymous “sock puppet” accounts on Twitter and Facebook that continues to this day.
One account in particular showed up on Facebook, followed by Twitter. calling themselves "Jessica Thompson". “She” later appeared on LinkedIn and TikTok. The M.O. was the same. Target perceived enemies who “she” feels are “communists”. Grievance and perceived victimhood are a constant with "Jessica".
The Twitter account immediately focused on other perceived enemies and me in the Fall of 2021 and continued to do so through April 2022, when the account was deleted from Twitter.
The Internet is forever, as they say. The entire history of Jessica Thompson lives forever in infamy on the Wayback Machine:
My “Hey Jessica” thread on Bluesky details the history of this harassment account, including a long record of related anonymous accounts that continue to harass people to this day:
I was doxed. My family was mentioned, and I was accused of things that were far from true, such as allegations that I was abusive to my wife.
I was sued in late April 2024. Not by the target of the TPA campaign in 2021, but by a friend of his with a long history of litigious behaviour. I feel I was entrapped in this lawsuit and have ample evidence to support this assertion.
Unfortunately, Alberta does not have anti-SLAPP legislation, which benefits those with means and access to legal services. SLAPP suits use the courts to silence opposition and are incredibly expensive to defend.
In my opinion, this legal action was designed to silence me, but it had the opposite effect. It is not in my nature to let bullying behaviour win out.
I feel the lawsuit is completely without merit, and if it went to trial, a judge or jury would see things my way as well.
I have also taken other steps to challenge this frivolous suit, including requesting a court-ordered disqualification of an opposing high-profile lawyer and reporting that lawyer to their governing body for conduct unbecoming of a professional. That matter is currently being investigated by the Law Society of Alberta.
I need financial assistance to settle past legal bills and cover future costs as this case ramps up and gains momentum. In my opinion, the plaintiff's actions and the past counsel's conduct were a deliberate attempt to run up my legal fees.
Any amount would help, as would any assistance you could provide to promote this. The defence of this suit has been very costly, time-consuming, and extremely stressful for my family and me.
My legal team is awesome, and I cannot think of a better team to have in my corner. Lawyers are not cheap, as anyone who has been sued can attest. I cannot afford to lose her. All funds raised will be sent to her immediately, net of transaction fees, as soon as I receive them each week.
I was fortunate to have a Court of King's Bench Justice sign off on a “litigation plan” recently that provides structure to the lawsuit and minimizes trivial filings. We are two years in, and even the most rudimentary processes have not even begun, through no fault of my legal team or anything I have done wrong.
These next steps are court-mandated and follow a strict schedule. That is a good thing. I am grateful to my legal team for what they have done for me to this point.
I do recommend that any donation be made anonymously.
If anyone knows the people behind this lawsuit, I feel they might also target any donors. Of course, if you choose to say a big FU to my opponents, by all means do so.
I have quietly tried to fight this battle alone with the support of a very tight circle. It has adversely impacted me on so many levels, and it’s time to get my life back.
As mentioned, Alberta does not have anti-SLAPP legislation like other provinces do. Such legislation would have helped stem the tide and evened the playing field at least somewhat.
Any help would be appreciated. Whether it be financial or letting others know of this plea. Every effort matters to me.
Please feel free to message me if you have any questions. While I can’t discuss my case publicly, I can fill in some blanks privately if need be.
Thank you so much to my donors to date and for all those reaching out to support me in other ways.
Brad
