In May 2018 I ran The Lexicon Bracknell Half Marathon and suffered a Cardiac Arrest on the finish line.
Thanks to the excellent event organisation, I received CPR on the finish line and two shocks from a defibrillator supplied by Berkshire Lowland Search and Rescue before being rushed off to RBH, where I was fitted with an implantable defibrillator called an S-ICD.
My best friend and husband were on the finish line and had a very worrying few hours but I am pleased to say my story has a happy ending.
Did you know only 8% of people experiencing a Cardiac Arrest outside of hospital survive?
We didn’t until it happened to me.
The survival rate is much higher in countries where defibrillators are more accessible.
A Cardiac Arrest can be suffered by children and adults alike, it isn't about fitness or health. It is more akin to an electrical failure which means the heart stops and the person dies. CPR can keep oxygen going to the brain but a defibrillator shock is required to save the persons life by restarting the heart, which is why we, my friend Claire and I have decided to help raise money to supply as many locked but 24/7 accessible devices across Bracknell as we can.
These will be registered to the ambulance service so anyone needing to use it simply calls 999 to get the unlock code.
We will be approaching local businesses to help us we are organising local events to riase funds, including an 80’s party or two!!
Any donation no matter how small will help us to purchase these amazing piesces of kit.£1500.00 will provide a defibrillator, a steele lock box and code and an 8 yr supply pack of batteries and pads.
