Support for Cheryl Thomas in Her Battle Against Cancer

A Journey of Strength and Positivity

My dear friend Cheryl Thomas was diagnosed with stage 4 colorectal cancer that had spread to her liver in April 2024. For those of you who know Cheryl, you know that she always makes you laugh with her great sense of humour. Throughout this journey, she has been my hero, always staying so positive and strong.

Cheryl's Treatment Journey

When Cheryl's journey started, she completed 8 rounds of radiation/chemo treatments. Her treatment then transitioned to chemotherapy at the Oshawa Cancer Center, which she continues to undergo. The chemotherapy has successfully shrunk the tumours enough to enable surgery for the tumours in the rectum at Sunnybrook. The four tumours in her liver will require additional treatment. During the surgery, a chemo pump will be inserted directly into her liver. Cheryl will need to stay on regular chemotherapy in Oshawa for a year after the surgery, and she will also need to visit Sunnybrook every second week for two days: one day for bloodwork and the next day for a chemo pump refill.

The Financial Burden

Cancer impacts not only your emotional and physical well-being but also your financial stability. At the time Cheryl was diagnosed, she was working from home but could no longer do so because of the neuropathy in her hands. Cheryl's husband, Dave, also has to take unpaid days off work for appointments. The cost of parking alone at these two facilities is horrendous, not to mention the cost of cancer medicines that are not covered.
