Urgent Help Needed for Surgery
Donation protected
An umbilical hernia has left 17-year-old Promise in debilitating pain, unable to eat or leave her bed. Complications from Promise’s condition could be life-threatening if not treated by surgical repair. Promise and her family live in Liberia, West Africa, where they do not have health insurance nor the resources to cover the cost of this emergency surgery. Angela, Promise's mother, has explained that "due to the amount of pains she's not eating anything besides hot water...I can't afford to see my baby like this."
I met Promise and Angela at the Buduburam Refugee Settlement in Ghana in 2008. Buduburam was home to refugees from the Liberian civil war, including Angela and her family. At that time, Angela was a young single mother who was working hard to overcome the trauma of her past to provide for Promise. Promise and Angela moved back to Liberia a few years ago when the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees closed the refugee camp and facilitated resettlement. Since then, Angela has continued to work to build a life for Promise, herself, and her two younger children there despite the harsh economic realities of life in Liberia, a country that is still trying to rebuild from the war. Angela has a small business that she runs out of her home, but this business barely gives the family enough to cover day-to-day expenses, let alone the thousands of dollars required for major surgery.
All donations will be transferred directly to Angela so that the family can afford to get the surgery done quickly. The procedure has already been delayed several weeks, and the doctors will not perform the operation without the money upfront. We appreciate all donations, as every dollar brings us closer to healing Promise.
