Barbara Powell Harris is a neighborhood champion, garden leader, and friend to all in Sarasota. She has spent her life supporting her community. Now, she desperately needs our help.

On December 9, Barbara was struck by a car while walking her beloved dog, Charlie. While Charlie left the scene unharmed, Barbara sustained severe injuries and remains unconscious in hospital care. 

Barbara's doctors are hopeful. They state they are seeing signs that recovery is possible, but the road ahead will be long and challenging.

Barbara is a deeply loved and respected member of the Sarasota community. She is the founder and manager of the Orange Blossom Community Garden, where she fosters connection and teaches locals of all ages to grow their own food. She also serves as Secretary of the Central Cocoanut Neighborhood Association, District 1 representative for the Coalition of City Neighborhood Associations, and as a volunteer supporting parks protection, air-quality initiatives, and the Multicultural Health Institute.

Barbara has given so much. Now, it is our turn to give to her.

Like most of us, Barbara was not financially prepared for this tragedy. Funds raised will support Barbara’s long recovery, including medical costs, physical therapy, in-home care, care supplies, and living expenses during the months ahead. Barbara lives with her sister Emily, who will be her primary caregiver and will manage these funds until Barbara is able to do so herself.
