Bowie Needs Heroes to Save His Life – Will U B 1?
by Heavenly Paws of Michigan, a 501c3 foster based, no kill rescue.
Bowie came to us off the streets with a torn cruciate and stage 2 heartworm; expected recovery time 3-6 months. Both healed as expected. But his health had other ideas. His liver enzymes were out of whack; with diligent care they started to settle… until they didn’t. They continue to rise. Then his calcium shot up. After testing & films we learned that Bowie has two unrelated conditions only curable by surgery: cancer (non-metastasized) and hyperparathyroidism. Without the surgeries, Bowie will cross the Rainbow Bridge in just a few months. With them, he will live a normal life span. The last year & a half have been difficult for everyone, including our rescue. Unable to have our normal fundraisers during this pandemic, we continued to rescue dogs & cats in need, vetting them as necessary & finding them furever homes. With our coffers depleted, Bowie needs heroes to save his life.
The surgical plan is to tackle both issues at once, limiting (both in health & cost) his need for anesthesia & hospitalization. They must do an ultrasound to determine which parathyroid gland must be removed. He will go straight from there to the operating room where they will remove the offending gland & the cancerous tumor. He will stay in the ICU for 2-4 days to ensure his other parathyroid glands start back up and to be monitored. If all goes as expected, Bowie will be cured.
Bowie is the sweetest boy anyone has ever met, extremely intuitive, gentle, reassuring. Before the world shut down, he went to Heavenly Paws fundraisers (where 4 legged fans were allowed), & pet stores to share the joys of rescue! He visited hospitals helping not only the patients but the doctors & nurses, rehabilitation facilities, & nursing homes. (see the pictures!) He loves his “work” representing Heavenly Paws. His way of giving back, his gratitude always on display. Even the specialists that have just seen him say he is the sweetest dog they have ever encountered.
