The Choummalaithong Family Is Grieving
Donation protected
Community + Fam, we are devastated to announce that one of the Haus of Glitter’s Co-Directors, Steven Choummalaithong, lost his father, Bounyim, to COVID complications last week. Steven is not just a member of our dance company, he is our chosen family — our bloodline. We are pausing fundraising for our Historical Intervention to launch an URGENT CALL to support the family’s medical bills + other urgent expenses. Steven’s father, was still working, at the age of 74, to put food on the table for his family and we want to do everything we can to hold his family during this sudden tragedy and hardship.
Bouyim spent 6 weeks in the hospital with doctors, Steven’s family, and our closest friends and chosen fam fighting tirelessly and praying desperately for a miracle. After incurring $8,364.00 in expenses, this fundraiser not only prevents their family from a massive debt during a time when their household is grieving, this fundraiser also supports Steven’s ability to continue dancing, to continue being a part of our show, to make sure that Steven has the opportunity to tell his story, his family’s story on the PVD fest stage this September. PLEASE consider what you can afford and double that just once (maybe twice) in solidarity with the immense layers of pain and grief that Steven and his family are holding.
Steven embodies his family’s lineage of wisdom, grace, resilience, passion, generosity, magic and of course, laughter and smiles. Our werk to shift the universe towards care, healing and liberation is because of the pain our parents and grandparents endured so we could have a better life. The story of Steven’s family and other Laotian refugees is a central part of our current dance opera in process — The Historical Fantasy of Esek Hopkins. We are holding our ancestors close and tight to honor their lineage in our practice. Our art feels more important than ever.
THANK YOU, community, for ALWAYS coming through to nurture us, love on us, grow with us, create with us, disrupt with us, breathe with us, and dance with us.
