Boston University Uprising stands unequivocally with the Black Lives Matter movement and all groups leading the fight against police brutality, systemic racism, and issues of discrimination in this country. When it comes to matters of racial injustice, staying silent is an act of further oppression.
The members of Uprising firmly believe that we must all commit to taking an active role in our communities on and off campus in order to address the race-driven murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, Tony McDade and the countless Black individuals who have lost their lives at the hands of our law enforcement.
As members of the ultimate community we are committed to inclusion across all racial, ethnic, sexual orientation, religious, and gender backgrounds. It is our responsibility as allies to acknowledge the privilege that many of us hold in a predominantly white sport. Recognizing the current underdevelopment of racial diversity is not enough. The ultimate community must place racial equality at the forefront of its development and continue to make the game accessible to all, uplift POC players, and highlight their roles in the strides this sport has taken.
We pledge to use our platform as a team to proactively dismantle the culture of white supremacy that touches every aspect of our society. As our first action, we will be collecting donations for the Equal Justice Initiative. The EJI is “a nonprofit, human rights organization committed to ending mass incarceration and excessive punishment in the United States, challenging racial and economic injustice, and protecting the basic human rights for the most vulnerable people in American society.”
For more information on how to donate, look out for further posts on our stories, Facebook, and by our team members. Additionally, we have compiled a google doc of resources and actions to take at this time, which includes a link to our fundraiser. To access it, go to the link in our Instagram bio! @buuprising
