Miracle Man Needs Help from Friends
Donation protected
On March 17, 2013, God created a miracle, and we need your help maintaining it. At 35, my husband, a decorated US Sailor, S.E.A.L. advocate, and state Corrections Officer, suffered 5 massive acute ischemic strokes, then underwent a Merci Clot Removal. A huge clot formed in his body somewhere below his heart. It then traveled from its unknown place of origin, through his heart, and up to his brain, where it lodged in his Basal Artery. The Basal Artery supplies all the blood to the brain. It looks like a "Y". Five pieces of the clot broke off, sending 3 to one side of his brain, and 2 to the other. The majority of the clot remained lodged, cutting of the flow of oxygenated blood to his brain. The neurologists had told me that the fact he was still alive after the strokes was miraculous, as 95% of those who suffer this type of stroke die almost instantly. The fact that Billy had FIVE and was still alive was unheard of. His was not out of the woods, though. That massive clot was still there, and if it didn't kill his brain by completely cutting off oxygenated blood to the brain, the clot would eventually break loose, causing a lethal stroke. Billy's only chance of survival was to undergo a Merci Clot Removal. Basically, a probe is inserted in the Femeral Artery, and threaded through his body up to the Basal Artery, where it would attach to the clot. The process would then be reversed. In layman's tetms, doctors would push a probe from his groin area, through his heart, stopping at the clot precariously lodged at the base of his brain...then pull it out. This was obviously a very dangerous procedure, in fact, his survival rate was 1%. So many things could go wrong. The probe could cause a heart attack when it passed through, the probe could push the clot into the brain, just to name two. Then, even if he did survive, he was going to be, and this is a direct quote, "a vegetable". I told them that they didn't know my husband; if he had a chance he would make it.
He survived all of this despite having a 1 in 183 million chance. The neurologist who performed the operation said that Billy's survival and recovery were no less than a miracle. He is not a vegetable...though he has many limitations, he is alive.
This should have been the end of our story, but it's not. We have been working to receive a Disability Retirement from his former employer...he gave them 14 years of dedicated service, and EARNED the disability retirement. We are also going through the process of filing for Social Security. Red tape has caused both claims to drag on.
While Billy has made a miraculous recovery, he shouldn't be alive. He needs several medications, constant doctor visits, and a caretaker, a role I fulfill. Matters get worse, because I have Chron's Disease, a condition made worse from stress. Life has been so rough that I've been hospitalized 11 times since September 23, 2014. Luckily, my best friend is a RN, and takes care of Billy when I'm hospitalized.
Okay, here's why we are on Go Fund Me...
Billy cannot work. As his caretaker, I am needed at his side, and the severity of my Chron's makes employment impossible at this time. We have been living on $400 a month he receives as a Disabled Veteran, and Food Stamps. We do not have a vehicle, and live in a rural area. We depend on medical transportation and the kindness of friends.
Family has helped as much as they can. My father (who was just diagnosed with Chron's, as well) was going to sell his house since he was moving in with his elderly mother who has Alzheimer's. Instead, he let us stay in his house free of charge. For the past two years he has paid the mortgage on the house, putting off his own retirement so we have a roof over our heads. My mother and grandma (Bumma) have moved heaven and earth to help us as well, though mum has health issues, and Bumma is on a fixed income. Despite living over 2 hours from us, they are always willing to make the drive to take us grocery shopping and run errands. They make sure we have what we need, helping out with bills, paying for medications, and helping wade through the forms, information, and red tape associated with obtaining Billy's work retirement and Social Security. She gives us all she can afford, going without so we can survive. Other family members help when they can, but its not like we come from money. We are all just average Americans. The help they have been able to give has put a tremendous strain on them, and they cannot continue. With my father's diagnosis and his mom's deteriorating health, he needs to retire, and won't be able to afford the mortgage on the house we're living in. My mother has used all her resources. Bottom line, we are in dire straits.
My husband is mortified that I am using this site to ask, no, BEG for help. Yet, I have my reasons for doing this, and they are...(1)Billy did not create the conditions that lead to the strokes. He was an avid outdoorsman. His job required him to be physically fit. He didn't drink or do drugs. He ate healthy meals...my Chron's limited our consumption of red meat, fried food, and fatty or sugary snacks. He worked out 3 times a week. Billy did not have high blood pressure or cholesterol. We've seen every type of specialist imaginable, and no one can explain why the clot formed. (2) My husband has dedicated his life to serving his fellow man. After high school he went into the military. He would have served for life, but became disabled as a result of his service. Once a civilian he went back into service, becoming the youngest Corrections Officer in the history of our state. His current goal is to recover enough to work with the Boy and Girl Scouts. He wants to pass on his knowledge of the outdoors to our nation's youth.
(3) He is living proof that MIRACLES DO HAPPEN. I will not let that miracle die because we're too proud to ask for help. Billy is not a man comfortable taking help. He is a self made man who has worked for everything he's ever had. I wish I could say his strokes were the only hardship he's ever endured. I promised him I would only talk about them, though. Let's just say that from childhood on he has known pain and suffering. With his history, he could be a total jerk, and few would blame him.
He is a good man, though. He'd rather die of thirst than ask for a drink. Any time he has to use our Food Stamps card he hangs his head in shame. That kills me. He has given most of his adult life to serving his fellow man. Now he needs help.
Stress is not good for his condition, it could cause another stroke, and I KNOW it would kill him.
I love this man with my whole being. He is my hero, my reason for getting up each day, and continuing the fight. He is my best friend. The 13 years we've been married have only strengthened our love. He makes me want to be a better person. Watching him worry about our future, and knowing there's nothing he can do kills me. The amount of time it is taking to obtain what he has earned is unfathomable. Billy was raised to believe the man provides for his family no matter what. The strokes have taken so much from him. Losing the self respect from providing for his family has been the worst.
That is why I am asking you all for help. I only put 10000 as our goal because that is the amount needed to pay the mortgage for the rest of the year, and the goal is to keep a roof over our heads. Any amount would help. I'm just trying to house us and get a vehicle. That is where any and all donations would go. We've been told his Disability Retirement will be resolved within 6 months, but until I have the paperwork signed I won't believe it.
I know there are thousands of people with worthwhile causes and ideas on this site asking for your help. Please, please, please give yours to a man who spent his life anonymously serving first his nation, then his state. Help keep this miracle alive!!!!!
Please feel free to ask me any questions. Thank you for your time and consideration.
