Please help BOSEJA Girls raise $5,000 to support digital literacy in Botswana.
Botswana Organisation for Sisters Empowering Junior Associates (BOSEJA) is a nonprofit organization that seeks to empower and support adolescent girls between the ages of 10-19 through sexual and reproductive health, life skills, and structured mentorship programs. We focus on the needs of girls from low income communities by advocating for them to get equal opportunities in education and empowerment to ensure they reach their full potential. BOSEJA has served over 1,000 girls in the Gaborone community and surrounding areas for the past 7 years.
As part of our work to support sexual and reproductive health, BOSEJA girls provides access to pads and education about menstrual health management to girls and community members. We work with other local organizations and institutions to distribute more than 200 pads per month to girls in marginalized communities across Botswana.
BOSEJA also aims to close the gender gap in STEM by offering digital literacy training to adolescent girls in the communities we serve. Women are significantly underrepresented in STEM careers across the world, and particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa. This project will support BOSEJA’s Beyond the Classroom Initiative, an after school program that provides girls with training on digital literacy, coding and programming. The goal of the program is to ensure that girls are equipped with the resources and training they need to access digital learning and create pathways for them to pursue careers in STEM fields. The funds raised for this project will help to provide technological equipment, safe transportation for girls to attend the training programs, as well as help to cover the costs of training facilitators.
Additionally, BOSEJA identifies and creates various ways to expose girls to careers in STEM fields. On the Day for Women and Girls in Science, BOSEJA organised an event for 300 girls at a local school where women who worked in STEM fields shared about their careers and experiences to encourage girls and inspire them to consider STEM careers. BOSEJA also took 15 girls from the Mochudi Village to an opportunity with the AIRBUS Little Engineer Program, which provided interactive 3D modeling workshops and other STEM skill development activities for girls who often do not have access to such opportunities in their communities.
