For weeks, toxic haze from forest and peatland fires has covered Kalimantan. The smoke has spread across five countries, from Malaysia and Singapore to Brunei and the Philippines. At its source, air pollution has reached nearly three times the “hazardous” threshold. More than 3 million people are living and working through it. Respiratory infections have surged past 170,000 cases in a single month, and schools have closed.
But this isn’t a story about people waiting for help. Volunteers are on the front lines beside firefighters. Families are protecting their elders and children. Local health workers are keeping clinics running through the smoke. Communities are refusing to accept a crisis that comes back almost every dry season.
They’re carrying this fight. We want to make sure they don’t carry it alone.
What your support fuels
- Medicine and oxygen
- Masks and HEPA air filters
- Community health posts
- Basic food supplies so families can keep going
Why we’re running
On October 31st to November 1st, our team will run a combined 360 km across Madeira. It won’t compare to what people in Kalimantan are enduring, and it isn’t meant to. It’s our way of raising awareness by putting our bodies behind our words, staying with this cause kilometer after kilometer, and asking you to stand with them too. Our goal is €3,600.
Who we’re working with
Funds will go through our friend @Jerhemynemo, an Indonesian environmental activist who represented Indonesia at the UN Climate Change Conference (COP29). He has led nationwide tree-planting campaigns and brought environmental education to communities near the Bantar Gebang landfill. Now he’s working directly with communities in Kalimantan to get supplies where they’re needed most.
