Hello, my name is Dara Greene, I am 15 and a student at Walton High School. I am excited to be participating in an expedition to Borneo in summer 2025. This will be a 4-week expedition and will include community development work, environmental projects and wildlife conservation. It will also include additional elements such as engaging in local cultures, wildlife restoration and plus a week of scuba diving for me to gain an official qualification to scuba dive to open a pathway for many more experiences yet to come.
This will provide me with unique experiences that cannot be replicated sat in a class room or reading textbooks, an experience of new and exciting cultures and to appreciate the rich diversity of Borneo, Team work and leadership skills and many universities credit this experience and is a welcome addition towards my CV.
The core objectives of this expedition are to undertake projects to:
- Raise the educational standards of developing communities within a rural district of Borneo. And building and maintaining facilities such as teacher accommodation and school kitchens. The welfare of teachers inside these schools are important as they further and inspire the education of young people.
- Raise the living standards and ensure cleaner and healthier living of developing communities, within a rural district of Bongkud. Improve sewage and water treatment within the local area.
- Assist with ongoing wildlife conservation programs to preserve biodiversity and protect vulnerable habitats. Reforestation programs replenish forests ravaged by commercial deforestation. Beach clean ups is a key project within this expedition, collecting the plastics that are dumped or end up on the islands shores allow for community groups such as a local women's group who turn the plastics into jewellery which can then be sold on.
- Community toilet block and sanitation installations. Providing toilet facilities that include clean and modern toilets and up to date washing areas. This helps reduce hygiene and healthcare issues within the community.
In order to fundraise some of the funds to travel on this expedition, I will be participating in a Triathlon in the Castle Race Series on Saturday 22nd June 2024 which will be held at Cholmondeley Castle. The race includes a 400m swim, 22km cycle and a 5km run. I hope to get sponsorships from companies and will also be participating in various fundraising events and activities. All money sponsored towards me will be used for Borneo.
