The Freedom to Dream - Borderless NGO

What is Borderless NGO  mission?

We work with marginalized communities to create a positive sustainable impact, ensuring the well-being of vulnerable families and changing their lives for the better.

Who is Borderless NGO?

Borderless is a volunteer-led independent Lebanese non-profit-organization (Registration No. 2775) with a mission to create life changing impact on the lives of vulnerable families. The NGO emerged out of existing needs within the local community with a central aim to serve the people. We strive to address the structural barriers to overcoming hardships in disadvantaged and at-risk communities, such as patterns of discrimination and exclusion; lack of access to essential public services; conflict and social disorder; and major public health threats.

These challenges are particularly acute for children, youths and women. As such, Borderless NGO identifies, builds, and strengthens the capacities, skills and knowledge to safeguard marginalized groups and equip them with the means for a better future. Through a community-based protection and development approach, we engage in a range of integrated programs that protect and campaign against all forms of discrimination; prevent and respond to abuse, neglect, violence and exploitation; ensure immediate access to appropriate services; and provide durable solutions in the beneficiaries’ best interests.

We are very much aware of the complex weave that is society; this is why we believe that our goals can only be achieved by extending our work to the entire community. Our goal is to strengthen entire communities by making improvements to the existing socio-economic fabrics that will benefit everyone.

We believe that all individuals have the power to raise themselves out of any situation; what is lacking however, are the motivation, know-how, and network. Thus, our work can only be achieved by the generosity of donors and the talents of volunteers from all corners of the world that push current frontiers and share our vision of a global community lacking edges, limits, or boundaries. Our vision is a world with healthy, resilient, and cohesive communities where the most vulnerable members are able to reach their full potential.

What is the Issue?

In the past years, Lebanon witnessed a substantial influx of refugees of mostly low socioeconomic status and suffered multiple national disasters, most prominently the Beirut Port Blast. Most of the displaced and refugees have settled in marginalized areas and are competing with host communities for jobs and this situation just exacerbated with the dual shock of the recent economic deterioration, along with the COVID-19 pandemic. The growing strain in these areas has led to mounting tensions and discrimination and has forced many children and women to work under unprotected or exploitative conditions to support household income. The prevalence of children and women living and/or working in the streets disregards them from their basic rights, increases their exposure to violence, abuse, health issues, aggravates the socio-economic inequities and will have long-lasting impacts on the community development. As such, any effort aimed at safeguarding the well-being (education, health and protection) of these children and women need to take these factors into account and also ensure that their rights—regardless of nationality, creed, or social status—are protected.

Borderless saw a need to address these issues in a sustainable and cost effective way and as such started a community-based protection and development initiative to allow the impacted communities to prosper, regain the sense of dignity and self-determination and for all people to work together to have an inclusive and prosperous community.

Why does Borderless NGO adopt a Community-Based Protection and Development Approach?

Our experience has shown that effective support can only be achieved in close partnership with the communities. It is premised on the basis that communities and marginalized groups are often better placed to identify their most critical problems and know how best to resolve them. By being able to better protect and develop themselves and their communities, they also become less dependent on external aid. In turn, their actions contribute to building healthier communities which better protect and look after their most vulnerable members.

What is a community center?

Community centers are safe and public places where children, youths, and women of diverse backgrounds can meet for education, recreation, livelihood programs, information exchange, social events, and other purposes. They are established with the main objective of empowering communities and their most vulnerable members and providing them with a forum to promote their participation in decisions that affect their lives. Borderless NGO currently operates two community centers: one center in Ouzai and another in Karantina, two of the most marginalized areas in Beirut, Lebanon.

What programs does Borderless NGO provide?

Borderless provides through a community-based protection and development approach a well-rounded set of services and interventions to create a life changing impact on the lives of vulnerable families and marginalized communities. We strive to ensure the right for protection, education, healthcare, social inclusion, personal well-being and financial sustainability of beneficiaries.

Our 4 community programs are delivered across both our community centers in Lebanon (Ouzai and Karantina) and are carefully designed to be integrated and collectively exhaustive:

1.      Safeguard and provide education to children
2.      Offer upskilling and training courses to working youth
3.      Empower women
4.      Engage the community

Transparency Commitment:

Borderless NGO operations have limited risk as we are already fully integrated in the communities and are executing the activities and the initiatives that demonstrate tangible success. We have previously worked with various international organizations and private donors and we have always taken the necessary measures to ensure transparency and make the most of the funds that are granted. The NGO has been set-up from the start with the appropriate checks and balances processes and undergoes regular external audits by an independent firm.. All our work is openly shared with the public through our social media  channels (we invite you to check one example of our success stories : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dOx7DVJM38Y) and we issue a public annual report that summarize our activities and impact. In addition to that, we would be honored to welcome funders and representatives at all time to check the execution of the activities. Your partnership gives us the confidence to address the issues that we must take care of immediately and our commitment is to steward your gift with the greatest of care.

FAQs:

How the funds will be spent?

100% of the funds received (after GoFundMe deducts the platform and processing fees https://www.gofundme.com/pricing ) will be used to pay for the monthly fixed operational expenses of the community centers that host the children, youth, and women and deliver services on a daily basis. These operational expenses specifically include:

-       Monthly stationary and  lunches for the kids
-       Monthly rent of the building
-       Monthly utilities fees of the building (electricity, and water)
-       Monthly salaries of the teachers

All other administrative costs and variable expenses will be separately covered by the NGO’s board through other private funding.
Please feel free to contact the NGO directly for specific details and any other questions: [email redacted]

What’s your specific plan for how the funds will be withdrawn from and sent to the beneficiary of the campaign?

As GoFundMe doesn’t not support Lebanon as a country (For your ease of reference, please check the supported countries on GoFundMe https://support.gofundme.com/hc/en-us/articles/203604044-Is-my-country-supported- ), the plan is to withdraw the final total amount to a personal bank account in the US and then transfer the total amount to the NGO’s registered bank account in Lebanon. All transactions will be documented, and an update will be sent to all donors. The NGO will publicly confirm / announce the receipt of money via their social media accounts.

Please feel free to contact the NGO directly for confirmation or any other questions: [email redacted]

We truly appreciate your generosity.
Thank you for your support!
