"The Border Loomers" - Weaving Stories Across Borders
Hello friends, family, and kind-hearted supporters,
My name is Fernando Serrano and I’m launching an educational, community-based art project called The Border Loomers-a creative initiative rooted in storytelling, textile art, and cultural connection.
The Border Loomers aims to bring together youth and families from communities on both sides of the U.S.-Mexico border to create woven artworks using traditional loom techniques. Through weaving, participants will explore identity, heritage, migration, and shared histories-all while learning valuable artistic and educational skills.
This is more than an art project. It's about:
Empowering young voices through hands-on, collaborative art.
Preserving traditional weaving practices while exploring contemporary stories.
Bridging communities often divided by geography or politics, and replacing division with creativity and compassion.
I am currently raising funds to:
Purchase looms, yarn, and textile supplies. Host educational weaving workshops and storytelling sessions. Provide stipends for local teaching artists and cultural mentors. Exhibit woven works in public spaces on both sides of the border.
My goal is $11,000, and every contribution-no matter the size-will go directly toward materials, instruction, and making this vision come to life.
If you believe in art as a tool for education, healing, and community connection, please consider supporting The Border Loomers. Your donation helps us empower weavers to create not just beautiful textiles, but stronger ties across borders.
Thank you so much for your support, generosity, and belief in the power of creativity.
Warmly,
Fernando Serrano
