Greetings,
My name is Christopher Hawking, and I teach senior-level Latin American literature at Grant High School in Portland, Oregon. I've been honored to teach this class for three years and am so happy to watch the numbers grow from just two sections a couple of years ago to 5 in the upcoming year. And because of this growth, my students need more books! I'm specifically looking to bolster the courses' choice selections so we can do more small group literature circles. For this particular fundraiser, I'm looking to purchase three titles that speak to the complexities of the U.S.-Mexican border as well as offer a profoundly human look at immigration. The three works I am seeking to purchase are:
Each of these books is highly insightful and well written, and in my experience, students genuinely enjoy them. As I mentioned above, I hope to offer these three choices to be read in small literature circles during a unit focused on issues at the U. S.-Mexican border. Ultimately students will work in small groups to teach a lesson to the rest of the class based on their essential learning.
Currently, my school owns only 20 copies of each of these titles, and I'm looking to expand so each of my approximately 160 students can read the one they choose. Like most teachers, I often use my personal funds to purchase materials to enhance my student's educational experience. Unfortunately, this particular need is beyond my capacity.
One more thing: This course has become my passion as a teacher, and I spend much of my time investigating exciting new resources to offer my students. Latin America's literature, art, music and history are rich and compelling and tell stories often overlooked in our educational system. Thank you for considering investing in my students.
