Living under a troubling political landscape, Evie Vazquez, a trans Latina woman, seeks help from her community to achieve gender affirming care/goals.
Evie has been living at the El Paso/Juarez border for twenty years, a place synonymous with militarization and continuous antagonization of immigrants. On top of this ongoing image war, Evie faces the uncertainty of being a person of color in the US, entailing further marginalization beyond that of being a trans woman.
This trifecta of challenges does not deter Evie, as she envisions feeling comfortable in her own skin, something that many of us take for granted. Although the road ahead will involve more challenges, she is confident in the support of her community. As a way of giving back to said community, Evie is organizing an exhibition titled "Safe Spaces," in which she invites attendees to step into flashes of her personal life and experience life as a trans Latina woman. The exhibition, as well as this campaign, will raise money to help Evie dislodge herself from body dysmorphia.
"Safe Spaces" will open in November at Nova Gallery at the FallStaff.
