The Backstory
As many of you know, my brother-in-law, Tyler, was recently diagnosed with a neurological disorder called Transverse Myelitis, of an unknown origin.
In the early morning of March 9th, Tyler awoke with no feeling or function from the waist down. He was taken by ambulance to Sioux Falls hospital, where he spent the next 5 days for tests and treatment. Before the test results came back, the doctor had a hunch it could be TM. So he began treating him with antivirals and steroids. With this treatment, there was a noticeable improvement, which was a good sign that the doctor was on the right track.
The lumbar puncture confirmed the doctor's initial assumption. Unfortunately the root cause of his Transverse Myelitis is still not known. TM can often be caused by a virus or infection in the spinal fluid, however, the infectious disease doctors have since ruled this out.
The Long Road Ahead
Since leaving the hospital, Tyler has lost all strength and nerve function in both legs, as well as his left arm. He is in constant, excruciating nerve pain. Without the function of his legs, he is in a wheelchair and can only walk temporarily with a walker before his legs give out.
Currently he is receiving outpatient IV steroid treatments, 3 times a week, for a couple of months. He is also undergoing rigorous daily physical therapy to strengthen his legs and walk again.
For those of you who know Tyler, you know that he has had more than 9 lives in his lifetime. Whether it be plunging from a two-story deer stand, breaking his back sledding, or falling through the ice, he has already overcome many obstacles. However, you also know that Tyler is an avid outdoorsman and hunting enthusiast. Being tied to a chair is torture all on its own.
How Can I Help?
With all of this overwhelming uncertainty comes the very present realization that all of these treatments are inevitably going to add up. The ambulance ride, hospital stay, and continued treatments are costly. With the Braschlers being a one income family, a pastor's income no less, the financial burden is very real. Let's help alleviate some of that stress and ease the burden.
I realize not everyone is in the position to help financially. However, we serve a mighty God and prayer is a powerful thing. Please continue to lift up the Braschlers in your prayers and come alongside them in this journey.
What is Transverse Myelitis?
Transverse myelitis is an inflammation of both sides of one section of the spinal cord. This neurological disorder often damages the insulating material covering nerve cell fibers (myelin). Transverse myelitis interrupts the messages that the spinal cord nerves send throughout the body.
“Have faith in God. Truly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be taken up and thrown into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that what he says will come to pass, it will be done for him. Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.” Mark 11:22-24
