Building South Carolina's First Literacy Rich Barbershops.
Books with Barbers is a nonprofit organization geared at helping close the gap of young African American males in the area of literacy. The goal of the organization is to fully equip local barbershops with libraries that fully attract the interest of school aged boys.
Our initiative will begin with Holiday's barbershop. The owner, Johnny Baez, has a special connection to our mission.
During his elementary years, Mr. Baez himself found reading to be quite the task. As a student in a general education 3rd grade classroom he found himself struggling as a reader. It was not until his 10th grade year in high school that he felt comfortable in the academic area of reading. Since then, Mr. Baez has gone on to earn two collegiate degrees and currently owns and operates his first barbershop. It is a goal for Mr. Baez to not only own multiple barber shops, but to also enrich his community while doing so.
Books with Barbers is honored to work with such an inspiring owner. All monies received will go to purchasing new books, bookshelves, and a small seating area to be housed within the barbershop.
