Studies show that kids who read more, read better!
And common sense says, kids who love what they read, read more!
At my school, we've committed to having students read the recommended 30 minutes or more per day, which could lead to them being exposed to ~13.7 million words by the end of 12th grade and has been shown to be positively correlated with higher reading test scores!
It is also recommended that students have access to at least 1,500 high-interest books in their classroom libraries.
My only problem is............. my classroom library is pathetic! Last year was the first school year that my school had an 8th grade, so we have very few books so far, and even fewer books that keep kids interested all year!
I set a goal to get my library to at least 1,500 books by the end of this school year. But my students don't have until the end of the year! We need 1,500 books RIGHT NOW!
So I want to take them on a book shopping spree to let them pick the books that they and my future 8th graders will WANT to read!
Each student will get to select up to 20 books at a local bookstore and get to select 1 book to keep as their own as reward for their hard work!
Young Adult books cost an average of about ~$20/book, plus we'll need bus transportation to get to the bookstore, so I'm setting a lofty goal of $35,000 to fill my library.
Lastly, my kids are returning to school after their neighborhood has experienced a pretty violent summer, including the death of a 10-year-old girl who was shot during an indiscriminate shooting of a courtyard in the neighborhood a few weeks ago. So I really want their return to school to be joyful!
Now here's the catch..... I need to hit this goal in 10 DAYS. I want to tell my students that our book shopping spree is fully funded on the FIRST day of Independent Reading in my classroom on August 6, and I also want to show them how much their community cares about them and their academic success by making this happen for them in such a short amount of time!
Please donate what you can and share this link with your network! 100% of the proceeds will go towards building my class library and ensuring that my students have access to high-interest literature in 8th grade!
Thank you so much in advance for your support!
Help me get my kids EXCITED about reading!
