Books for Maine Refugee Kids

Donation protected

77 children have joined the Southern Maine community and schools at the end of a very long journey

I'm Your Neighbor Books would like to welcome these children with a box of books that honor that journey, tell them about immigrant life in America, and allow them to "meet" other American children.

Families from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Angola, and other countries took a long and dangerous journey from their home countries, across the ocean, through the  jungles of Central America and to the U.S. border. Hearing that Portland, Maine was welcoming to asylum seekers and that the city had a small African immigrant community, over 300 asylum seekers made their way North to the city of 67,000.

Imagine that journey.

Imagine the parents' commitment to their children's future.

The city and citizens of Southern Maine stepped forward and offered the asylum seekers shelter, food, supplies, housing, and more. Read More .

As Maine schools opens, 77 kids step through the doors in a new country.

They have so much to learn.

They have so much to teach us.

If you are reading this, you know what friends books can be - to both heal wounds and envision a future. We would like to put some of those book friends in the hands of the 77 children.

I'm Your Neighbor Books is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that highlights the lives of New Arrivals and New Americans through the sharing of children’s literature. We know the books that allow readers to see themselves and others in a way that changes the culture of Belonging and Welcoming.
