Our dad, James Samuel McCoy, 78, passed away peacefully on January 20, 2026.
As many of you know, our dad was a passionate reader. Wherever he was relaxing, there were always three or four books stacked by his side. He was a fixture of the public libraries in each of his hometowns.
Dad became especially close with the community of the Leicester Public Library, nestled in his beloved Blue Ridge Mountains. He befriended the staff and often brought them candy on his twice-weekly visits. They tried their hardest to keep new books in stock for him—it was hard to find something he hadn't read! As a champion for education, Dad believed that books can ignite curiosity, foster empathy, and expand opportunity.
The Library is also home to the Leicester Giving Garden , a volunteer-run group with a mission to connect and strengthen the community through growing and sharing food, with a strong educational focus.
Community, books and agriculture...we can't think of a better tribute to Dad's life.
The Friends of the Library team has asked that we gather all donations in one pot and then we'll work with them to decide what will be most fitting for their goals as an organization while also honoring Dad.
We appreciate any amount you can give! If giving online isn't your thing, but you still want to participate, let us know and we'll give you info for sending a check.
Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
Kelsey, Keelan and Jane
