Booker T. Dunmore Jr's FINAL Launch - Hook, Line & Sinker

Booker T. had a zest for life. And he had a passion for fishing….anywhere and any day of the week! One special overnight trip he cherished was taken with our dad on a large fishing vessel which launched into the Atlantic Ocean.  Recently, my beloved brother Booker Thomas Dunmore, Jr., the second of nine children of Booker T. Sr. and Naomi Rush Dunmore, took his final trip when he died of natural causes.

He loved many things - God, people, art, singing and his dogs. The word “stranger” was not in his vocabulary. Booker T. had the gift of gab and his favorite activity was participating in gatherings centered around food, fun and fellowship.

Before “Racial Reconciliation” became a contemporary term, he personally lived out the concept. Before emojis were created, big bright smiles were emblazed on faces when he entered the room. Before the Mr. Rogers movie “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood”, Booker T. was actively being a good neighbor, making the neighborhoods in which he resided better places to live.

Although he was not formally educated, Booker T. had wisdom and a keen wit. Many still quote some of his funny and pithy sayings.

He was self-employed for most of his life in the field of Home Improvements: painting, plastering, landscaping, handyman, snow removal … a true jack-of-all trades.  Always industrious and resourceful, at one point Booker T. would catch and clean fish. Then, he would boldly sell sandwiches and freshly caught fish on the DC Wharf, competing with the business establishments located there.

Booker T. and our other siblings grew up in a Christian home with a father who was an Elder and later a Pastor. He first accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior at a young age. However, like so many, he wandered away from his faith as a young adult and suffered challenges along the way. He rededicated his life to Christ and subsequently served for many years as an usher, trusted deacon and mentor at the Greater Harvest Baptist Church in Washington, DC.

Booker T. returned to Pittsburgh to care for our parents when Dad’s health declined. The lives of both our dad and mom were greatly enhanced and prolonged as a result of his culinary skills, loving care and devotion. For this self-less act of service, our family is eternally grateful! In Pittsburgh, he served as a faithful usher, mentor and deacon at the Pittsburgh Christian Fellowship (Church), under the leadership of Senior Pastor Chris DeMark, who became a close friend and fishing partner.

The wake for Booker T. will be held on Friday, February 28th from 6 – 8 pm. The Memorial Service is scheduled for Saturday, February 29th at 11 am. Both events will be held at the Pittsburgh Christian Fellowship (Church). The location is: 407 Brownsville Road, Pittsburgh, PA 15210.

In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that monetary contributions be sent via GoFundMe.

Thanking you in advance for your prayers, acts of kindness and expressions of condolences to our family.
