Boo Bear's Fight for Life

Donation protected
My precious little Boo Bear is 10 weeks old today, July 21, 2020. Every new pet owner's dream is to have a healthy, happy little puppy when they come home, but poor Boo’s short life has been filled with ER visits and ICU stays as he fought the worst bout of parasites the vet at our hospital has ever seen...

He is on the road to recovery, but has accumulated $15,000 in medical bills, including life-saving blood and protein transfusions. The past couple of weeks have been nothing short of a rollercoaster as the physical toll on Boo bear and the mental, emotional and financial toll I have undertaken has been beyond anything I anticipated, but I could not imagine making any other decision than to save his life.

I am doing handy work on the side to try and earn money towards his medical bills and I humbly ask that anything you could offer to help as this little guy continues to recover is very much appreciated – no amount is too small <3.  I understand if you’re not able to share anything monetarily and just ask that you keep this little guy in your thoughts and prayers!

Detailed story (and cute pics!!) below...

----

I adopted Boo Bear from North Carolina, where I immediately took him to the vet for his first round of parvo vaccinations and deworming. During his first week with me, he was a happy, loving and playful pup – I couldn’t believe how much joy this lil guy already brought to my life. I loved spending every second with him even if it was him sleeping endlessly, as new puppies do, next to me on the couch or down by my feet. We bonded immediately and I couldn’t wait to spend many years to come with my little (soon to be big ;)) sidekick.

Boo Bear was adjusting to life in the big city and was happy and healthy until 2 weeks ago when I had to take him to the emergency room twice as he started becoming sad, lethargic, wouldn’t eat or drink and had a sudden onset, extreme GI issue.

The vets at the ER were unsure as to what was going on, so after a negative parvo test they gave him fluids and anti-nausea meds and sent me home with instructions to give him a bland diet. He seemed to improve for 24 hrs after his meds, but within 48 hours we were back in the ER after he wouldn’t eat or drink water and had severe diarrhea where we suspected blood was in his stool.  After another negative parvo test and more fluids, they sent us home with anti-nausea and anti-diarrhea meds along with meds for suspected stomach ulcers. Within 24 hrs it became apparent that this wasn’t working and something continued to affect Boo Bear as he remained sad, wouldn’t eat and would barely drink water.

On Monday, July 6th I took him to his primary vet where I was finally told he still had roundworms as well as an aggressive bout of hookworms and coccidia that wasn’t previously caught despite my prodding for further exams. Feeling relieved that I finally had a diagnosis, I took Boo Bear home and kept giving him the medicine he was prescribed by the ER and his primary vet. I thought we were finally out of the woods…

By Tuesday he was continuing to eat very little and wouldn’t drink water so I started feeding him water with a syringe because I didn’t want the little guy to have to get his 4th round of fluids in just a few days – who wants to spend what felt like every waking minute in a hospital, scared and alone due to Covid rules that don’t allow visitors…

Wednesday noon came around and it had been 24 hours since Boo Bear had anything to eat – he was hiding under the couch, only coming out for comforting hugs, and started to become less and less responsive. Terrified of this behavior I rushed him to the vet as I knew something was horribly wrong and it was critical for this 4lb little babe to get enough nutrients and fluids as he was growing. The vet quickly told me I needed to get Boo Bear to the ER immediately because he was critically ill with suspected anemia.

Rushing through the city trying to make sure I got to the ER fast enough to get Boo treated was beyond stressful – this guy needed care now. I finally made it to the ER where I received a call that is every pet owner’s worst nightmare – approve an immediate blood transfusion with a 3-5 day ICU stay with no guarantee of survival or Boo Bear would die within the hour. I was in complete shock. With minutes to make a decision, I knew that the best course of action was to give Boo Bear a fighting chance – he had made it through the hell of the previous week, he could make it through this. After 4 nights in the hospital, Boo bear had shown incredible progress, so they sent him home with me first thing Sunday morning.

By Tuesday afternoon, I was back at the hospital as his diarrhea had returned and we feared they had missed something or he wasn’t responding to treatment. The vets continued to assure us that Boo Bear would make a full recovery, he just needed time to fight his parasites and instructed us he should be admitted back into the ICU. By Friday we were feeling frustrated and unsure if the treatments were working and after prodding for answers were told that a follow-up fecal analysis could be done to see if his parasite infections were clearing – I couldn’t believe it had taken almost 2 weeks to complete a re-check of his infection levels. We finally feel we have some answers as I’m thrilled to report that as of Sunday, Boo bear has cleared his roundworms and hookworms and is receiving a stronger medication to clear his coccidia as the previous medication did not clear his infection.

Pending no issues, the little guy should be out of the hospital tomorrow morning where he'll be back home continuing his meds for the next several weeks. Stay tuned for updates on the cutest husky in Brooklyn :)

Thank you again for the support. I was hesitant to ask for help, but am humbled by any support you can provide <3
