We are a group of longtime friends who have had the privilege of watching 9-year-old Bonham Smith grow up. Our friendship began in graduate school, and over the years, we’ve witnessed firsthand the joy, kindness, and light Bonham brings to his family, friends, and the Denver community.

Why We’re Reaching Out

Recently, Bonham was diagnosed with Chiari malformation—a structural defect in the cerebellum where part of the brain extends into the spinal canal. Despite daily symptoms that impact every aspect of his life, Bonham remains resilient, attending school when he can and facing each day with courage. Now, he needs neurosurgery to relieve his symptoms and restore his vibrant childhood.

The Journey Ahead

Finding a highly skilled pediatric neurosurgeon for this rare condition has been a long and challenging road for Bonham’s parents. Thankfully, they have found the right specialist, but the surgery requires traveling out of state. Starting July 14th, 2025, the family will begin a series of trips for pre-surgery appointments, the surgery itself, and post-operative care. With this essential procedure, Bonham is expected to make a full recovery and return to the life every child deserves.
