We’re currently living in Indonesia and as you may know animal rights are a luxury over SE Asia. Dogs are dumped, beaten and abused without much repercussion. So for some dogs that come our way, we try to help them out the best we can.
We recently took in Sehitam, a wonderful and nice dog who has a very pleasant and loving personality. We believe she was dumped on our street. She seemed well looked after, had nails cut. We are unable to find the owner and she didn’t seem to have a home to return to.
The name Sehitam roughly translate to ‘As black as’. Our previous rescue dog was ‘Seputih’ which can be translated to ‘As white as’ so we thought it was a good fit!
Sehitam was mostly unwanted on our street. She’d be beaten for taking peoples sandals and had buckets of water thrown on her to try to move her on. As she kept coming back and risked being abused further, we decided to take her in to look after her.
She was kicked by someone and then thrown through the air, resulting in a bad fracture.
Sehitam otherwise is a lovely dog, and never aggressive or angry. She returned to our home happy and still in good spirits. Despite being in a lot of pain, her tail was wagging and she was pleasant to be around.
Searching for an emergency vet, we had found one 30 minutes away that was able to help. They had come to take her, provide x rays and assess the damage. The fracture itself is in a bad place, around the elbow area and requires bone surgery with pins and screws to heal properly.
Sehitam goes in for surgery on the 22nd of July and is expected to stay at the vet for 10 days afterward to monitor her recovery. After that, she will require up to 8 weeks of in home care and limited movement, along with more xrays to confirm how the fracture is healing.
The vet does not allow part payments and wanted everything upfront. While we were able to pay up front, it’s left us in a tough spot. So we are asking for help to cover the costs of the vet, and ongoing care.
July 23 Update: Sehitam surgery has been successful and she is expected to return in four or five days home. It will still be a long road to recovery, and will be a challenge to restrict her movement so she can properly heal!
Note: GoFundMe has cropped the top of this image.
The Costs and Donations
The costs for the xray, review by doctor and surgery totaled 12,876,500 IDR. We also had paid a 1,000,000 IDR deposit with cash, which is not included in the above cost estimation. With our Australian bank transfer, the total for this had come to $1,225.47 AUD.
With the ongoing care required, we also need to purchase a cage for limited movement to help recovery and follow up appointments with the vet and doctor.
We have a couple of animal rescue shelters in Bali which we like. Any extra funds outside of Sehitams full recovery will be donated to them! Thank you so much for your help.
