What is Bolivia 4ward?
Bolivia 4ward is a non-profit organization founded by the ethical manufacturing company AHA Bolivia. Since 2013, Bolivia 4ward has provided a supplementary math program that focuses on underserved children in temporary homes in the Cochabamba community. During their two week winter break, over 200 children have the opportunity to strengthen their math skills in the Bolivia 4ward classroom through Khan Academy, an online math learning platform. Under the guidance and support of three university volunteers, kids work through math at and beyond their level. While they rotate through our limited number of computers, the kids play fun educational games, read books, or do arts and crafts. For the upcoming year, we would like to extend our funding for a science experiment rotation. This program allows the kids to make mistakes in a safe environment, to help build their confidence in both school and life. This year, a secondary aspect was added to Bolivia 4ward, providing bikes for kids. This is meant to educate kids on a possible free mode of transportation or possible jobs in the future.
What is our need?
In raising money to supplement both elements of Bolivia 4Ward, we hope to further address the needs of the children we are working with. Bolivia’s current education system is lacking in many ways; school days go only 4 hours, either in the morning or afternoon and learning time is severely compressed. Math training in particular is lacking, a need we hope to address through the math tutoring aspect of Bolivia 4Ward. The program currently has only 8 functioning laptops for groups of up to 20 children at a time; and we are seeking to raise money to provide 5 more laptops so more children can practice math at a given time. Additionally, as stated above, many of the children we work through this program are living in temporary homes. These children often spend most of their days within the boundaries of their temporary homes, leaving only for school. Providing these children with biking lessons and bikes gives them free, sustainable and readily available transportation to work, possible job outlook, and other places they might need to go, as well as simply an opportunity to be outside their hogares for a while. Additionally, Bolivia 4ward coordinates free bike mechanic lessons for the children, empowering them to maintain the bikes, and facilitating the opportunity for a future job in bike mechanics, a profession with great demand in Cochabamba. As of now there are significantly more children than bikes; to further address and support these children, we are also asking for enough money to supply 5 more bikes and a bike rack for the children to store their bikes. The biking excursions through Bolivia 4Ward are a fun and safe way for the kids to socialize with the volunteers and practice their riding. As we have a limited set of bikes for multiple homes, we would like to provide a guide to take the children on monthly guided bike excursions throughout the year.
What do we hope to achieve?
Computers + repairs = $1500
Bikes + Bike Rack = $1500
Bike Coordinator (500) and Math Coordinator (500) = $1000
Total = $4000
With any extra money, we will buy other material for the math and bike program
