Als historicus gespecialiseerd in het Israëlisch-Palestijns conflict heb ik mij de afgelopen jaren in de publieke opinie gemengd in de discussie over dit conflict. Al snel werd ik geconfronteerd met de zogenaamde Israël-lobby, een internationaal netwerk van lobbyclubs, pressiegroepen, journalisten, opiniemakers en politici dat ook in Nederland zeer actief is en als enige doel heeft de staat Israël te vrijwaren van internationale druk, zij het politiek, economisch of in de publieke opinie.
Hoewel iedere staat ter wereld een lobby voert in het buitenland en de publieke opinie wil beïnvloeden ten behoeve van haar eigen belangen, is de schaal en de agressiviteit waarop Israël dit organiseert en uitvoert, ook in Nederland, uniek in de wereld. Israël heeft hier zelfs een speciaal ministerie voor opgericht, het zogenaamde ministerie voor 'Strategische Zaken'.
Na jarenlange bestudering van de Israël-lobby tegen de achtergrond van de ontwikkelingen in het Israelisch-Palestijns conflict, schrijf ik een boek over hoe de Israël-lobby opereert in de Nederlandse context. Vanuit welke algemene strategie opereert de Israël-lobby? Hoe vertaalt zich dit naar de - tactische - werkwijze in de Nederlandse publieke opinie, politiek en sociale media? Hoe zit Israëlische propaganda inhoudelijk in elkaar, in vergelijking met wat de serieuze geschiedwetenschap of journalistiek over het Israelisch-Palestijns conflict en de staat Israël te zeggen hebben?
Voor het grote - in nieuws en internationale politiek geïnteresseerde - publiek in Nederland zal dit boek beter inzicht geven in het nieuws en opinies die zij dagelijks over het Israëlisch-Palestijns conflict voorgeschoteld krijgen. Het Israëlisch-Palestijns conflict duurt al zo lang en is zo complex en verweven met allerlei andere gevoelige (historische) onderwerpen dat het moeilijk is feit van fictie te onderscheiden. Deze complexiteit en gevoeligheid is één van de basis van waaruit het de staat Israël nog steeds lukt via haar lobbynetwerk middels gerichte propaganda een onevenredig grote invloed uit te oefenen in de Nederlandse publieke opinie en politiek.
Uw donatie stelt mij in staat mij de komende zes maanden volledig te richten op het schrijven en publiceren van dit boek. Uw donatie zal dus bijdragen aan een beter begrip van het Israelisch-Palestijns conflict door het Nederlandse publiek en de wijze waarop de staat Israël dit begrip en beeld probeert te beïnvloeden om oplossing voor dit conflict gebaseerd op internationaal recht en mensenrechten te verhinderen. Indirect doneert u uiteindelijk dus voor mijn bescheiden bijdrage aan een rechtvaardige oplossing van het Israëlisch-Palestijns conflict.
Niet alleen - maar wel ten eerste - ten behoeve van de miljoenen Palestijnen die als volk al decennia onder Israëls militaire bezetting leven op de Westoever of in Gaza maar ook voor een democratische seculiere staat Israël dat zich binnen de internationale rechtsorde plaatst en het volk dat zij al decennia lang onderdrukt een eigen staat of gelijke rechten geeft. Dit is namelijk evenzeer van belang voor het voortbestaan van Israël als thuishaven voor het Joodse volk zelf, dat volgens mijn stellige overtuiging met de huidige extreemrechts religieuze weg dat het ingeslagen is, uiteindelijk op haar eigen ondergang afstevent.

As a historian specialized in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict I have occupied myself the past years with discussing and writing about this conflict in the Dutch public debate. Very soon I was confronted with the so called Israel-lobby. An international network of lobby groups, journalists, publicists and politicians which is very active and aggressive in the Netherlands and whose sole objective is to shield the state of Israel of pressure, be it political, economical and guarding its image and standing in public debate.
Although every sovereign state in the world lobbies on behalf of its interests in the international arena and tries to influence public discourse in its favour, the scale and aggressiveness the state of Israel puts this in to play is unique in the world. Not for nothing, next to a ministry of foreign affairs, Israel has a special ministry of ‘Strategic Affairs’ fighting this battle with its perceived ‘enemies’ in the public sphere anywhere in the world.
After studying the Israel-lobby for years against the backdrop of the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict, I am going to write a book on how the Israel-lobby operates in the Netherlands. The core of the book is on how the Israel-lobby works on a strategic, tactical and content level in general. Since for the time being it will be written in Dutch for a Dutch readership this will be placed in the context of Dutch media and politics.
This book will enhance the insight and understanding of the general Dutch public in the day to day news and opinions about Israel, Palestine, the conflict and the way the state of Israel through her international network tries to steer Dutch public opinion in line with its interest. These interests in general, a few exceptions not withstanding, in the post Oslo era but especially the last decade with the growing hegemony of the (extreme) right and religious right in Israeli politics, are not aiming for a resolution of the conflict based on international law. Contrary to the general image of the state of Israel in Dutch mainstream media, the current state of Israel (as it did in most of her history) is looking for the continuation and deepening of the conflict through annexations on the Westbank, normalizing the apartheid reality on the ground and further dispossessing the Palestinians.
Your donation will contribute to the writing of this book. I will be able to focus solely on writing this book for six months. Indirectly you will be donating your contribution for a just resolution of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict based on international law and human rights. The Netherlands is a small country but in the international arena it plays a prominent symbolic role in the cause of international law and human rights, housing the international court of Justice in The Hague. Also in the European Union, as the fifth economy, it is an important player in which historically the Netherlands has been a staunch Israeli ally the past decades mainly for protecting its numerous economical ties and interests with Israel. On the other hand, the Netherlands have also been one of the biggest donors, trying to help Palestinian society in the occupied territories.
In contributing to the resolution of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, your contribution is first and foremost on behalf of millions of Palestinians whether exiles, fugitives, living under the Israeli military occupation on the Westbank for the past 53 years or suffering from ongoing economical strangulation and war in Gaza.
