In lieu of flowers, please donate funds to the Mathcounts program at Ynez Middle School.
Bob was a loving a father, grandfather, spouse, friend, teacher, and coach. He passed away peacefully on March 08, 2016.
He and Nora Shen co-founded the Math Club to foster an interest in math and their students began to compete in Mathcounts, a national math competition.
In Nora’s own words” Our first year we prepared the students and drove out to the competition…we came in last place! Ever the coach, Bob told the dejected students that it was not that they were not smart…it was that we needed to train them better. He took us out to an ice cream parlor to “celebrate” and he gave the students a pep talk…
He knew how to coach any sport but he did not want to go to another meeting… So the following year I attended workshops to find out how to coach the math team…he asked me to find out little strategies we might employ. He used the strategies to train the students. We even had students practice reaction times with a buzzer system! We met on Saturdays to train…he brought breakfast burritos a couple times…mmmm! We started a math club to generate interest in math and groom future MathCounts competitors…the end result was the Ynez students started winning the local competition and proceeded to the next level of competition.”
The torch has been passed to Miami Yang and Caren Ong who now coach Mathcounts and have continued to succeed.
