Irene B. West Elementary School in the Elk Grove Unified School District recently lost one of our dearly beloved teachers, Bob Waters. Mr. Waters was a dedicated teacher and coach who committed to and succeeded in improving the lives of everyone whom he came into contact with. It is the desire of the teacher, parent, and student community to honor his selfless contributions by dedicating the school gymnasium in his name.
Mr. Waters won his battle with Leukemia a few years ago. Sadly, it returned and the battle was too great this time. Our community is devastated, yet we find comfort in reflecting on the passion he had for teaching and coaching. His colleagues, students, and parents witnessed teaching and coaching at its finest. Mr. Waters was an inspiration to fellow teachers by setting an example of excellence. He was a lifelong learner himself and had a great love for kids. He was always thinking of ways to engage students and to excite them about learning.
As committed as he was to classroom teaching, he was equally committed to coaching the school basketball team. He was skillful at teaching the mechanics of basketball to young athletes and instilling the value of teamwork and cooperation in them. The student athletes who were privileged to play for him learned life lessons that only Mr. Waters could teach. He epitomized the value of hard work paying off. Over the years, his teams won 3 district championships and had 5 undefeated seasons. He never tired of raising the bar for these kids in and out of the gym and classroom.
While Mr. Waters is no longer with us, the Irene B. West Elementary School Family will never forget the contributions he made to our community. He was a remarkable person who had a great love for his family, friends, students, and parents alike. It is our desire to see that his legacy continues by naming our school gym after him. We would like to dedicate the facility with an inscribed plaque that will let all those who come to our campus know how special an educator and coach he was. For a man who has given us so much, we want to give him the recognition he deserves.
