Bob Battey Adventurer Scholarship

The Battey family is creating a fund to provide ongoing scholarships in memory of Bob Battey, Scoutmaster of BSA Troop 202 from 2015 to 2017. Bob was a masterful and enthusiastic outdoor adventurer, who led the youth of his troop on adventures in backpacking, canoeing, whitewater rafting, kayaking, hiking, cycling, rock climbing, rappelling, winter survival camping, and even spelunking during his brief time with them. We are inviting you to contribute to this fund in his honor.
The Bob Battey Adventurer Award will provide college and career training scholarships to youth who demonstrate exceptional passion, leadership, and skill in camping and outdoor adventures. The requirements for this award will be rigorous, so it will be open to all youth members of Troop 202 and Venture Crew 2202, both young men and women up to age 20. The intent of the Bob Battey Adventurer Award is to promote the development of future generations of leaders who will keep camping and adventure central to Scouting. It is also meant to encourage older scouts and venturers to remain highly active in the troop and crew, so they can continue to mentor younger scouts.
This award is meant to complement Troop 202’s existing Jack Loring Award, a competitive campership award which is given to one scout per year who shows the highest overall participation in scouting activities, and is achievable by scouts of all ages. The Bob Battey Adventurer Award is not competitive and will likely take an entire Scouting career to complete, so the prize will be a college/career training scholarship, not a campership.
Award Requirements
Any registered Scout in Troop 202, or Venturer in Crew 2202, is eligible to earn the Bob Battey Adventurer Award. There are two requirements:
* Earn the National Outdoor Badge for Adventure. This requires participating in 10 “high adventure” type camping experiences, such as extended canoeing and backpacking trips.
* Earn the National Medal for Outdoor Achievement. This is Scouting's highest honor recognizing outdoor activity, and is much harder to earn than even the rank of Eagle Scout. It requires, among other things, 125 nights of camping, extensive training in wilderness first aid and conservation, and the planning and leading of multiple outdoor activities. The troop has no record of any scout earning this award in the past, but we have several "gung-ho" teens who are well on their way to achieving it now.
How You Can Help
The family would like to raise $10,000 in order to fund $1000 scholarships for many years to come. If we exceed this goal, the fund will last even longer! This will not be a competitive award: there will be no limit to the number of youth per year who can earn the award, so that groups of friends can work toward achieving it together. The award will be presented at a special ceremony that the troop holds each Memorial Day weekend.
To avoid any conflict of interest, members of the extended Battey family will be eligible to earn the Award patch but will not be eligible for scholarship funding.
