Hi, my name is Barry, and I am raising funds for my cousin Bob LeCaptain and his family.
On Monday, August 15th Bob had a stroke in his home. He was taken by ambulance to St. Vincent Hospital in Green Bay and had the blockage removed. Over the next days, he suffered further complications of large brain bleeds in his frontal lobe and blood infections. He was in ICU for three weeks and is currently in in-patient rehab.
Bob was sick since June and had a 5-day hospital stay in July, but ultimately his diagnosis was unknown. We now know that he had a blood infection that caused subacute endocarditis (inflames the heart/valves), which affected a bicuspid heart valve (a congenital defect) he has. ‘Vegetation’ built up on the valve and eventually broke off and went to the brain, causing the stroke. The special clot-busting medicine used during the clot removal has risk factors including brain bleeds, which is what happened in Bob’s case. The brain bleeds will take anywhere from three to six months to absorb and affect his reasoning and thinking.
Many of you know Bob as a non-stop, active guy, running in marathons- including Boston twice- Fall 50 races and completing the IronMan. He’s also an active member of the GBOA, refereeing high school basketball games, and state basketball tournaments! Bob loves his job as an assistant principal at Preble High School. Bob is constantly staying active with his wife Tracy, daughter Belle and boys, Anthony and Grant.
Bob is doing well in physical therapy and walking with a cane, but will continue to work on physical, occupational and especially cognitive therapies to get him back to his old self again. Once home, Bob will need out-patient therapies and remain off-work for months. Recovery time is unknown and depends on how his brain heals. Any donations would help with medical expenses, lost wages and out-of-pocket cognitive therapy programs that would help give Bob the best chance of recovering quickly.
Tracy, Belle and the boys can’t wait to have Bob back home, back to normal and pray for a full recovery. Bob’s family is thankful for all the support, well wishes and prayers as they navigate this unexpected situation.
