Nursery Sensory Room

As most of you will already probably know. Our 2 year old son, James was recently diagnosed with ASD.

His Nursery Sunny Meadows in Handsworth, Sheffield have been amazing and very supportive of all our family during this difficult and at times stressful period. The love and support and superb pastoral care given to James and his sister Erin whilst she has been up and down with her emotions has been invaluable. 

The nursery mentioned to me that they intend to use the proceeds of their annual summer fayre to create a sensory room in the nursery for all the children to enjoy.

Sensory rooms are designed around the space you have and the users whom will be in it on a daily basis. Whilst conducting my research I have found that state of the art and more importantly robust ones do not come cheaply and knew that the nursery would benefit greatly from some external support in their Aim.

This cause is very close to my heart. sensory rooms have calming benefits for both neuro typical and neuro diverse children, generally they would be designed to include a range of stimuli that will help individuals to develop and engage their senses.  

Sensory rooms hisorically and most typically have been used to aid those individuals who have learning difficulties, developmental delays and difficulties or sensory impairments. 

The user whether  it be a child with or without a disability is able to use the room as a safe environment that they see as none threatening it can improve a child’s focus on a given task and make them more engaged, improve balance ,  and enhance their learning or simply it can be a haven and provide a moment of comfort for an overactive, over stimulated or distressed child.
