Meet Emmanuel Bassey. He is 18 years old from Nigeria and is a first year college student in Ontario. While visiting his relatives in Canada, a few months prior to starting class September 2025, Emmanuel had to receive emergency medical treatment. He was initially treated at St. Martha's Hospital in Antigonish and subsequently hospitalized for a week at Queen Elizabeth ll in Halifax, and six additional weeks of home care in Antigonish. He is expected to continue his treatment for a period of six months. Emmanuel was able to receive the treatment he needed here in Canada. However, Emmanuel is on the hook for $78,000 in medical bills, as he discovered his medical coverage via college wasn't in effect until later when the school semester began.
