I’m the summer of 2018 I went to the hospital to get skin grafts on my hands. I expected to be there between 5/7 days. The first day I was there I woke up out of the initial surgery to be told I was riddled with infection, S. Maltophila and numerous other infections, that it ate away the bone and tendons in my pointer, middle and ring fingers on both hands and that I would need to be in the hospital for two months. During that two months I had 4 surgeries on both hands. I lost much of the use of my hands and range of motion. Since I have started the reconstruction process of my hands. So far as of today, 11/5/19, I have had 17 surgeries. We reconstructed my left hand as much as possible. I don’t have great use of it but it’s better then nothing. We started the reconstruction of the right hand and made it to the end of the process. When going to change the cast we found that my hand, again, was riddled in infection again, STAPHYLOCOCCUS AUREUS. I had three more surgeries with the outcome being that we had to remove all the reconstruction. Sometime within the next three to twelve months, when the hand is healed enough, we can start again with another tendon transplant. This process has made it so I have been unable to work. I was excited to be at the end and then to be told that we had to start over and it would be another year or year and a half was crushing. I’m doing ok, trying to survive. This has been very difficult on my emotional status. I have found myself very depressed at points but I try and remind myself that it could be worse. I could have lost my hands. I could have lost my life but I am still here and I am able to restart the reconstruction process at some point. I have, educated guess, at least at a minimum 4 more surgeries. Any help would be so greatly appreciated. If you keep an eye on this site I will update it with status of where I am in the recovery, reconstruction process.
