My name is Kristina, and I'd like to get my brother’s story out there with the hopes of helping him and his family during this life-changing event. Most family and friends are fully unaware of the events that have led up to the hospitalization of my half-brother, David Keeney. We chose to keep this information as private as possible for his privacy, as we did not have a good prognosis and were unsure of the outcome.
David is 37 with two children (Kira, 8, and Karter, 11) and a fiancée (Brittany). He has been through so much over the last month. On the days leading up to January 15th, he had not been feeling well and was unable to keep anything down. Then on the 15th, he began to go in and out of consciousness and became paralyzed. He was then rushed by ambulance to the nearest hospital, where soon after arrival, with a blood sugar of 1600, his organs began failing. He was placed on a ventilator and in a medically induced coma. He received dialysis and remained in this state for weeks in the ICU. The outlook was not looking good, and on the days they would attempt to wean him off the ventilator, his body was not responding well. At one point, he went into cardiac arrest, and thanks to the medical team and use of the AED, they were able to shock him and bring him back to us!
On February 4th, the decision was made, and a trach was placed. Things began to look up. David was finally removed from the ventilator and woke up on February 8th. He has a very long road of recovery ahead and is currently still in the hospital. Over the next few days, he will be flown to Baltimore for a EUS and then return back to the hospital he’s being treated in. We are in high hopes that he will have the trach removed, and then possibly be moved to a rehabilitation center. We are all so thankful he is progressing in the right direction!
Needless to say, this has been very hard on David and his family. Although David does have medical insurance, we are unsure at this point what all will be covered. Each day, the bills and financial burden continue to pile up for this family. Please consider donating to David and his family to help with the financial burden during this difficult time. If you are unable to donate, please consider sharing this post! David also has CashApp and Zelle, which I will link in the comments for those who wish to donate directly.
