Blue's Top Surgery Recovery Fund

Hi Everyone,
I hope the new year is treating you well!
For those who may not be familiar with me, I'm Blue! I'm the singer and guitarist in the Philadelphia-based indie-pop band Best Bear. If you've been part of the DIY music scene, you might have seen me on the road, playing bass with other amazing bands like Community Center, Matchstick Ghost, The Sonder Bombs, or Biitchseat!
I wanted to share a personal journey with you all. Years ago, I realized that having a large chest didn't align with my identity as a non-binary queer person. Dealing with a prominent feminine feature caused a lot of gender dysphoria and unwanted attention, making me uncomfortable in my own body. While I tried binding and using high-impact compression bras this year, as a singer, it became challenging to breathe and maintain stamina with that level of constriction around my ribcage for extended periods.
Last January, I took a significant step and scheduled a top surgery consultation with Dr. Jared Liebman (Einstein / Jefferson Health). The consult took place this past December 4th, 2023. During the consultation, they submitted my information, a therapist's letter, and photographs to my insurance. I'm thrilled to share that just a few days ago, the surgeon's office called to inform me that my insurance (UHC PA Medicaid) has approved all the costs associated with my gender-affirming surgery. (AMAZING - I am so thankful!!!! And still in disbelief)
My surgery date is set for Thursday, January 25th, 2024. I'm reaching out because I'm currently raising funds to support my living expenses during the recovery period, which can last around 6-8 weeks. Throughout this time, I won't be able to work or lift anything over 5 lbs. I'll need to sleep on my back, elevated, attend post-op appointments, and rely on the kindness of my family and friends for everyday tasks.
Having this surgery during the winter is crucial for my recovery so that I can get back to touring, performing, and working this spring and summer. My primary work involves performing, animal care (pet sitting, dog walking), as well as physical labor and delivery driving—activities I won't be able to resume until I fully recover.
Your support at this time means the world to me! If contributing financially is not feasible for you right now, sharing the fundraiser on social media and with friends and family is equally important and incredibly helpful. No amount is too small! Whether it's $1 or $100, each contribution brings me closer to my goal.
Thank you so muchhhhh. As the fundraiser progresses, I'll be brainstorming some thank-you gifts to express my gratitude for your kindness! (Postcards, thank-you songs, drawings - whatever I can do)
With heartfelt appreciation,
Blue
$2800 would directly go towards my living expenses (rent, utilities), medical supplies, transportation costs, and any other bills that might pop up over the 2 months while I will be unable to work. Anything raised above that amount will also go towards those categories and help create a buffer while I look for new employment after recovery.
