UPDATE: 8/30/2025 Our 8 month old puppy’s life was taken away from him way WAY too fast. And so we had to sadly put Blue down on 8/26/2025, his heart failure took his life extremely fast. We weren’t quite prepared for only four days with him after diagnosing his early stage congestive heart failure. Our expenses and debt that we endured in less than three months is now at $ 5900.00 (that’s only since June when his initial diagnoses was given). He is now in a place of no pain I hope, and is running and eating and taking walks whenever and wherever he wants to! Our family is moving through this painful time together, I’m grateful to have people around us that care. Makes it a little easier knowing I have a shoulder to cry when needed. Thank you to everyone that has sent us positive thoughts and energy, and also to everyone that has helped us with giving monetary donations. To help give us some relief to our finances we incurred to cover his visits, testing, and cremation costs. Hi, I’m Jennifer and this is Blue’s story I’m his (gwam-maaa) and my daughter Nevada is his mama! We adopted him February 11th, 2025, along with another rescue a little older named Finn. Blue was labeled as an Akita mix that would be around 35 pounds full grown. At 8 months old, Blue is 51 pounds and counting lol . Blue and Finn are ABBOTTs and it’s been tough but we wouldn’t change it. They need us just as bad as we need them!
Unfortunately, two months ago, he was limping so we took him in. We didn’t know why the limp. Blue, at only 6 months old, was diagnosed with a heart murmur. It led to us taking him to a cardiologist and finding out he has 3 genetic heart defects that now have made him inoperable indefinitely. (Side note, he stays intact because they can’t operate and let me tell you… my rescue Finn was hoping for a neuter lol). He also has a front leg with elbow dysplasia, we were told. That was one of the hardest things to hear for any pet I’ve had. They said he could live 7 years… he could live 7 minutes. We just don’t know, and that’s excruciating. As a fur baby grandma, to know I can’t do anything about it… is very difficult. BUT from that moment on, I swore to him and myself that I will provide him with a life worth living! Best life we can!
Two months have gone by and he is absolutely amazing and loving! Such a lover!!!! But I had to take Blue to the emergency room last week. He was very lethargic, not eating great, and depressed/withdrawn. Also laying in places he normally wouldn’t. I noticed those changes within 48 hours and started to get scared. The last couple things I noticed with him prior to making the decision to go emergency… he was passing blood through his stool. And Blue had one rear leg that seemed to be turned outward all of a sudden, and both were very straight when walking (as if they couldn’t bend). And so unfortunately, this ended up being a very difficult vet visit that ended with bad news. Blue, at 8 months old, is diagnosed with double rear hip dysplasia. That puts this little guy having 3 out of 4 legs with dysplasia. (The bloody stool was from something that wasn’t agreeing with his digestive system and good news, he should be back to normal, which he is 90% back already!).
Getting the diagnoses for the dysplasias and 3 heart defects, it has cost over $4,000 in medical bills. His orthopedic consult is September 3rd. We will be getting him equipment to assist if necessary: a wheelchair, rugs to cover some of the floor plan to give traction, supplements, dietary change, therapy, etc. We are looking at what physical therapy we can incorporate into Blue’s life easiest and most effective for his 3 legs. His cardiologist follow-up is September 2nd. We will be reevaluating if his medication is helping and deciding if we will be continuing it as an option to help prolong his life best we can. It’s not easy at all to ask for help, but we need it. The costs for vet and specialty dr visits, testing, medication, equipment, and medical supplies is what we will be able to purchase or pay for with donations. This little guy is showing that he has no desire to quit and he’s ready to face the toughest challenges and conquer them!
